I 'd have to say no. Altough maltose has glycemic index of 100 and would create a nice insulin spike and quickly replenish glycogen stores, the harmful effects of alcohol on the body would minimize the anabolic effects, not to mention if you drank to much and eneded up vomiting up all of your other nutrients, that would be quite detrimental in your quest for increased muscle mass.

What TD said is on the money, but later that day make sure you have a Red Stripe and a bowl of high grade marijauna, good luck.

Alcohol (any amount) will adversely effect the bodies ability to absorb nutrients. The more you drink the worse the situation gets. So all the supplements and all the good eating you do is negatively effected. The best course would be don't drink at all and at the very least limit intake..

Mikey:

Thick Dawg gave you some nice input (damn, man ... I'm impressed!). Fitness for Life may have overstated things a bit, as far as complete abstinence goes. You really can't avoid ALL alcohol, and in small amounts it doesn't interfere with absorption. The human body naturally produces about a half gram of ethanol per day through the fermentation of food in the gut. That's why we have the enzymes in our liver (like alcohol dehydrogenase) that break alcohol down. Most people don't know that.

So, unless you or someome close in your family has or had an alcohol problem, it's something that you should use in moderation, but only moderation, which means not drinking more than once or twice per week, and not drinking more than one or two drinks per occasion. The average American drinks about three drinks per week. Anything above that is "above average." Yeah, believe it or not, them's the facts, man!

Havoc, I always love your lighthearted advice! You remind me of myself about 30 years ago.

Pimp:

What do you mean, you don't "see much point in 1-2 beers"? 2 beers do me just fine. But then, I don't have any tolerance for alcohol. Haven't done any serious drinking in 25 years.

1 beer is one "drink equivalent," with the same amount of alcohol as a jigger of distilled liquor, or a 5 ounce glass of wine. The average American drinks 3 drink equivalents or less per week. Now, that's very hard for a lot of people to believe, and it's impossible for heavy drinkers to believe because of the "social funneling" effect, but it's true.

BTW, I'm no "recovering" type. I just know a lot about this stuff. Anybody is welcome to email me offline if they wish. I'm always glad to make a friend in the iron brotherhood.
