Here's the problem, my computer at work is a 400mghz and my home computer is 450mghz, but my home computer runs significantly slower than my work computer. I've done all the obvious shit to speed it up including shutting down my power manager. Any suggestions? Also, has anyone out there overclocked there CPU?

Compare the following info on both!

What OS are you running?
What kind of CPUs...celeron, PII, PIII, AMD?
How much memory?

There must be a reason...holla back

Did you Defrag it? It takes all the space from shit that isn't bein used b/c you deleted a program or what not and allows your cpu to move faster. I do that when I clean shop with my mp3s.

Over clocking your chip is cool but you run chances of over heating it. Normally the warning is the machine running slow and attacking stupid - by then sometime it can be to late.

Look at your task manager and see what running.
So re-boot your system ( for fresh start -clean look) and then hit alt/control /delete and look at all the stuff that is running in the background. Chances are one or more of them is slowing it down. Go about seeing what they are and if you want them running.

That and how long have you been operating without formatting your hard drive. Every now and then you just have to clean house.

What operating systems are in use & exactly what runs slow...bootup time, a specific application, internet connect speed?

I wouldn't recommend overclocking.

Yo Cubano .. here is what I did .. and I think everyone else should do this I had a 400 II and If you goto googlegear.com they are sellign a brand new 650 III in sealed box with 3 year warranty from Intel... Its only 239.00 last time I checked and I believe it has gone lower Now before I oredered it I put my P II 400 on E-Bay and I sold it for 159.00 and shipping was an additional 10.00 so for the difference of like 80.00 I got a brand new P III 650 .. If you have any questions E-Mail me bro.. trust me there are idiots out there evry day who would pay 159.99 for a P II 400 is beyond me but I thank him ..

And you will notice a shit load of speed improvement I was amazed with the new languages .. for the P III

Good luck brother ok now Im goign back to my anabolic board catch me there Cubano..

Peace

I've done the disk defrag, my hard drive was formatted less than 6 months ago and there are only the mandatory programs running. I shut all of the rest of them off. In general, it boots slow, downloads slow, loads programs slow. Everything is slower than my work computer. Also, when I used my ADAPTEC system check on my computer it said that it could transfer 3000kb per second and my work computer said 6000kb per second. At home I get the buffer underrun message when recording cd's from music on my hard drive, which means that the transfer of data is too slow. At work I have no problem at all doing this.

This sounds weird. Maybe the hard drive/CD on your work computer is SCSI. SCSI runs noticeably quicker.

Do you have any virus scanner program going .. they really fuck up your system speed.

I've got a similar situation. I have two gateway computers, one is a Pentium II 400 and the other is a Pentium III 450. The 400 runs circles around the 450. I don't know why this is happening but it has been this way since I took the computers out the box.

Back up your files. Switch your hardrive at work with the one you have at home. Then complain to your IS dept. at work, and they'll get you a new one.!!!! sj

Actually, at my job we have tons of 10G and 20G hard drives laying around, but I'm too much of a pussy to snatch one up.
