Someone tried to hack me but my Zone Alarm blocked it.... Does anyone know how I can find out who owns the IP addy for 208.61.28.78.mia.bellsouth.net Is there a site where I can find out where that came from? I'm kind of a computer newbie. Any help would be appreciated.     | ||

Just because a firewall blocked access to your pc, doesn't mean it's a hack attempt. What port did it try to access? ------------------ | ||

Well, you don't have any netbios files, so to speak. Netbios is just a way to easily transfer files between 2 computers. It's still hard to say if it was a hack attempt. You can run tracert through a DOS prompt to find the relative location of the IP address, but if it's a dynamic ip, it's probably changed already. There's not really much you can do about it, unless you have proof that the IP address in question caused damage to your PC, and even then, a lot of ISP's will tell you that the security of your computer is your responsibility. ------------------ | ||

How then do people get address and phone numbers when a IP becomes public, it has happened a couple times on this board and the mods say its not difficult. Slopain | ||

It isn't difficult if you have the backing of a lawyer or the police. An ISP won't give out personal information unless there is a VERY good reason (ie, the user of the IP broke the law). And even if there is a good reason, the ISP is still able to simply cancel the account without giving out any pesonal info of the IP user. ------------------ | ||
