I'm working delts in the gym tonight, and this redneck looking kid (not knocking rednecks, but u just had to see this guy) comes in the gym w/ tight ass wranglers on and a lynard skynard t-shirt. Of course, I knew what he'd run to.. one of the bench's to work chest like most of the 'kids' in my gym. Anyway, he puts 135 on there and struggles to get 10. Then he goes up to 205 and sits on the bench just staring into the mirror for atleast 15 minutes. So I walk up to him and say, "Hey man, if u need a spot just let me know." Heres the funny part... He proceeds to tell me how he "use to" bench 300lbs but he can't do it anymore. He never gave me a reason or anything. He just said.. I use to bench 300lbs but I can't do it anymore. Ok, sure he could've had an injury causing his benchpress to go down. But this guy weighed all of 140lbs, looked like he's enver lifted a day in his life. You guys have those kind in your gyms?

That same thing happened with this guy I know. He said he used to bench over 300. He went to the gym with us and couldn't get 135 more than 6 times by himself. You know what I call that: A liar. Peace...Mav

You gotta love the "when I was in highschool I was in excellent shape and looked quite impressive while benching 405 for 13 reps". Come on, give me a break. For most people you can tell that they were athletic at one point and not just "big boned".....

Hey, non-steroid induced male breasts can be quite the bench press trampoline in times of need. The broad-wasted fellows are probably looking for ways to increase intensity - go past failure - by doing these no-spotter-necesarry forced reps.

I think that a lot of guys consider the weight on nautilus machines the same as on free weights. They say that they have pressed 300+ lbs., but they will struggle with controlling anything above 200 lbs. on the free weight side of things.

ON a more serious note, I also agree with that. It's a hell of a lot harder to both stabilize the bar and lift it. Some atheletes train on those goofy-looking giant rubber balls when doing dumbell bench, and because of the extreme need for stabilization on those things, they are only able to lift miniscule weight. Principle is the same for free weight vs machine lifts.

135 x 10 reps equates out to about a 185-200 lb bench tops. Muscle atrophy must have kicked him in the balls pretty hard. Probably started after he was dropped on his head a few times.

those balls are called swiss balls or physio (sp?) balls..they actually work very well..i do one chest excersize with them...it helps work your abs and lower back...they look like theyd be for pussies but they are so hard to control and shit..if yer gonna try it id say have a (well known) trianer teach you some movements
