I'm getting a home theater system and DVD player soon. Is there a certain home theater system and DVD player I should look for.
I went to Costco/SAM's and saw home theater systems go for $369 and DVD players go for as low as $169.00 Some of the brands were Pioneer, Toshiba, etc. Anyone an expert in this arena?

for the money, get the low end toshiba DVD...they are on the fifth generation while everyone else is on their third...do you have a stereo now?...is it seperates (power amp, pre-amp) or is it A/V receiver style?...if it is A/V (w/o surround) does it have a pre-out to enable the hook up of a seperate 3 channel amp?...

I recently put together an all Sony system with a 32" FlatScreen Vega, top-of-the-line 5 disc DVD changer, 2 of their top-of-the-line VCR's hooked up together, one of their better recievers, a decent tape deck and a PSB speaker and sub system. Kicks ass, but the biger FlatScreen would've been better.

Special Bill: No I have no stereo. How much do you think it's gonna run me for a whole home entertainment system roughly? I don't need all the goodies just something that sounds good and is reliable.

HOLY FUCK ROTTEN!! How much did you spend on all that? I bet your shit ROCKS!!!!!

keep it simple....buy a sony A/V recevier with at least 60 watts to each of the five channels...make sure the front three are identical in wattage....since its sony, it will be SDDS (sony dynamic digital sound) compatible...good!..now try to get one that is Dolby Digital and 5.1 as well...buy small bookshelf speakers to save money..i like polks and JBL's for the money...eventually you will add a powered subwoofer...and dont scrimp on your center channel speaker...if possible all three front speakers should be identical....yamaha and bose make some good tiny seperate speaker systems...you can find the best deals on-line..i saw a Pioneer THX-Ultra refrenced receiver in town for 1600 and paid 1011 on-line....you can usually read reviews as well...have fun...

basics...surround processing receiver...three front speakers, two rears...TV....DVDplayer...HI-FI VCR...subwoofer

Yeah bro, Bill gave you really good advice. As far as speakers tho, go and listen to all you can. Listen to the same song on each. Make sure the salesperson turns everything else off, except what you want to hear. Find the pair that sounds best to you, that you can afford. Your the one paying for them, and your the one who has to listen to them all the time, so get what you like. Good luck, and take your time picking stuff out

Bill hit it on the money.... Also can't stress enough on the center channel speaker-go all out on that one. Also spend some $ on the sub-woofer. 5.1 dolby is a MUST requirement.

Shit I just dropped 2k last year on my sub(Boston), dvd, and receiver alone(All Sony). You will never regret that you did it.

All I'm waiting for now is the HDTV's to come down in price.

Hi,

I only have two words for you Miller & Kreisel

http://www.mksound.com/

THE BEST AV SPEAKERS YOU CAN GET AND THERE SUBS ARE FANTASTIC.

I used to work in a HI-FI store and have listend to nearly everything and M&K are one of the best for AV.

Meridian Are better but you dont have 20k to blow on a system.
