Its only 120 yards down, how bad could the water pressure be? It really sucks that the sub is stuck, you would think with all this tecnhnology, rescuing a few people from a sub would be a piece of cake.

Nope its that deep!
Divers have to breath special gas made up of alot of noble gases that take a long decomp.
Std scuba gear only gets you down about 200 and you better know your shit because you'll need to take your time on the way up.

The sub is a big ass bitch - 12400 tons or something and its got alot of water in it. Not a ship in the world could lift it - I don't even think the ship they made to grab the other sunken russian sub could lift it.They tryed to lift it whole into an oil tanker and it broke in half on the way up.

Although I have no scuba diving experience and I don't know if this can even be remotely applicable to the situation with the sub, but I have gone bottom fishing in 150 feet of water and half the time you get the fish to the boat, their stomachs are practically sticking out of their mouths due to the change in pressure. I know it is probably a dumb analogy to compare fish and humans, but multiply 150 feet by 2 1/2 and that is one hell of a change in atmoshperic pressure. I can only imagine what it would be like at 350 feet.

Scuba wise - that is considerable depth. Pressure, among other things, reduces the size of your lungs, and all of your internal organs.

When you scuba dive, you have tocome up in increments, letting the pressure slowly decrease. Coming up much too quickly will result in - literally - an implosion of your body.

Another risk, even if coming up more slowly - is "the bends" which is an overabundance of nitrogen in the system.

I know that there are a few people who have dived to 500 feet with no gear. But that is literally taking your life into your hands.

I don't know JACK SHIT about hoisting a sub off teh floor, but 12,000 tons in 24 million pounds, so I can't imagine it would be that easy. And these guys can't just pop out and swim to the top - for the aforementioned reasons.

The U.S. has two pieces of equipment that could help them out, but it would take up to 1 week to get there and the Russians have refused help so far anyways.

I'm surprised they don't have some kind of pressure suit or detachable vehicle that could be used for situations like this. Sure, you can't fit 100+ people in a pressure suit or a detachable vehicle, but it's sure better to take several trips to save everyone than to wait for them to die. Large ships have lifeboats, fighter jet pilots can eject and parachute... why didn't anyone think of that for a sub?

Yeah it was a A&E documentary. The russians had a sub go down in the early 80's. We wanted it realy bad so we duped up a tanker as an mobile oil drilling rig. But it was full of gear to pull the sub up. They grab the sub and in the process of pulling it up it came apart. It was a deisel sub - that carried three war heads like most of thier fleet. They had a ceremony at sea for the bodies they recovered. Just a little while ago we gave the Russian goverment a video of it. They were not happy that we grab thier sub.

Yeah, I saw that one too. Really interesting show. It was earlier than the '80s though. Howard Hughes was involved and I think it was the late '60s.
