Why is it that some lifters feel the need to grasp the bar when they are spotting someone? Yesterday, the guy I usually do chest with was sick so I was on my own. I usually don't use a spot except on my last set or two. Anyhow, my last set on incline I asked a guy for a spot. I was using a weight that I usually get for 6-8 reps and I told him that I probably would'nt need any help except for maybe on the last one. So I lifted it off then he grabs the bar and rides it for all 8 reps. I wanted to tell him after the first rep that I ddid'nt need any help but I have a hard time taliking when I am lifting. I did'nt even feel like I did anything. The guy was fairly decent size so I figured he knew what he was doing. Apparently I guessed wrong. I s it just me or do you not feel like you are doing anything when someone has their grubby paws on the bar?

I hate bad spotters so much, that I prefer dumbells to bars now. When you hit absolute failure, just drop the fuckers, no jackass spotter needed. Since I train alone, it works out well anyway.

I love spotting these type of guys!
They start pressing the weight and I dont touch the bar at all! When he hits the sticking point I gently with my fore finger tab the bar to past the sticking point then I let go so its always 99.9% his. These newbies fucking hate that! They want me to grab the bar so it looks like their pressing 225 15times! HAHAHA!! Not a Fucking chance!!!

No shit good spotters are worth there weight in gold. How about the guy that puts on about a hundred pounds more than he can do, gets under it, you practically get a hernia just trying to keep it from crushing his chest, then he does about 8 of these "reps", then gets up and asks you if you had to help him on the last one.

I had to spot one of those idiots once. It was this guy that I knew from school like half my size and he was trying to bench 20 more pounds than I could for reps. So there he goes: "I might need a little help on the last few." After 3 poorly performed first reps, he gets stuck halfway up. I give him the "fore finger assist" to get him past the sticking point. He goes back down and the bar gets practically glued to his chest and I had to give him the "I am barbell curling this assist." Suddenly he says "3 more." Fuck that... I told him "no, you're done" and I racked that shit.

Hell, I wasn't there for a biceps workout. Idiots... I swear.

I hate that shit too. When I spot someone I always ask how they want me to spot, hands on or hands off.

I spotted a dumbass who wanted to bench like 290 for 8 reps, he got maybe 1 and I only helped when he slowed down. His girl was watching and he eneded up hurting himself because he was out of his league. A spotter is jsut to make sure you dont hurt yourself, not lift the weight for you. If bylou need help that much, decrease the weight!

I find it helps to explain very clearly how you want someone to spot you.

I tell them not to touch the bar unless I say 'help'.

Remember, spotters are doing you a favor.

If you ask someone who doesn't know your style for a spot, you are doing so at your own risk.

I used to never have to worry about having a good spotter because I used to work out with my friend. Basically, the spotter would stand there with his hands behind his back and not even breathe on the bar until he heard "help." "help" = "fore finger assist." One or two reps later and yer done no matter how many reps you were supposed to do. But once you hear "can't," it's time to jump in there and do 99% of the work... I remember uttering a few "can't's" way back when... hehe.

btw, LOL TD the four finger assist... I'll have to look into that one.

i hate the people that spot you as soon as they start to see you struggle. when your lifting heavy, its natural to struggle, but then they grab the bar and i'm still like a couple of reps from failure. i hate that!

If a guy is big it doesnt necessarily mean he knows anything about BB... A big guy in my gym thought pulldowns was for chest...

Check this one out. A month or two ago, I asked a guy for a spot on my heaviest set of squats. I told him to just look out for a sticking point...I might need help on the last rep. I get under the bar, step back and the dude reaches under my arms and grabs my chest and assists me on my first rep! Who in the hell spots squats like that. Needless to say, I told to "backoff" and he didn't so I had to almost yell it a second time while standing there with all of this weight on my back. Freakin' pissed me off which fueled a pretty good set then!

I spot with my hands under the bar but I don't help any unless its needed. Only due this when someones lifting a lot. This isn't a bad spot is it?

I don't give a fuck what they expect to happen when I spot them, I ask if they want a lift-off and after that the only time I touch the bar is if it stops moving. And even then I only help as little as necessary. Some people really get pissed and then walk past you to find someone else to give them their next spot. Like they are hurting my feelings.
