![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ..You had better feel goddamn lucky and thankful to fucking live here. While watching '3 Kings' tonight I was thinking about how we all have the luxury to sit in our warm houses and bitch about AS laws and Bill Clinton while most of the world is starving and living in war-ravaged hell. It's not to say that being unsatisfied with what you have is bad, that's how progress is made, but imagine living in a place like Iraq or Kosovo. I know how this country is writhing in a pool of it's own bullshit but I think we owe a thanks to the vets that fought so we could have the freedom to bitch about it. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a problem with alot of the stupid ass laws and regulations in this country but I love it still the same. My father has 2 bullet wounds and even more shrapnel scars from Vietnam, because of his love for country and duty. I'm lucky to even be alive! I'll knock out any bitch ass punk on site that would ever say he earned his purple heart for nothing. Any son of a bitch who thinks this country sucks should have their sack immediately cut off and deported to some place like Iran, with the rest of their body not far behind. I sometimes have to kick myself in the ass for the stupid comments and whines that I make about the laws and stuff here, but the truth is we are truly lucky. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My parents are off-the boat, thus I was raised in the US but very "Europian". When people like my husband (boyfriend at the time) would hear me speak of examples of problems that we have this country that do not exist in many other countries (not that there isn't anything wrong any place else) I would get stupid comments like, "Well if it's so great in Hungary - go back there then!" Instead of, "Well perhaps, this, this, and this could be done to rectify the problem so this could be an even BETTER country in which to live." YOU FUCKING FOOLS WHO HATE THIS COUNTRY SO DAMEND MUCH I SAY, "BUY THEM A ONE WAY TICKET TO CHINA AND LET THEM BURN A FLAG THERE!" (I'm all for free speech, just using this as an example - perhaps those militia wackos outta check out a TRULY oppressive government!) The US isn't perfect, but my father risked his life just for the opportunity to come here. Looking at my cousin's lives and my own, I'd say I'm indebted to both my parents for leaving everyone and everything behind (they thought FOREVER) to come hear and start over, alone, without the knowledge of language with nothing but the clothes on their backs. I grew up in church hand-me-downs and w/out a BMW, but I had OPPORTUNITY and education and freedom. THnak you to my parents for doing such a courageous and unselfish thing (they worked like dogs to raise me and my siblings) and thank you to those vets who risked and gave their lives so that I could grow up here! ![]() ![]() ![]() My thoughts exactly frackal, another thing that also pisses me off, is when people strut around with Foriegn flags yelling how bad ass their country is, and shit like that, if its so bad ass, how bout you take your ass back there. I know damn well I wouldn't be running around screaming in a foriegn county with an American Flag flying, shit I would get shot. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Natymike (edited August 10, 2000).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reading this post got me a little irritated. You all seem to think that the US/Canda is the best place to live in. I agree with that 100%. It's the best place for those of us fortunate enough to be born here, or fortunate enough to escape and come here (like me). What all of you ignore is the fact that the third world would not exist were it not for the luxury that the West enjoys. The entire western world (US, Canda, Britain, Europe...) feeds off the rest of the globe through a massive exploitation mechanism known as capitalism. By exploiting the resources of places like Indonesia, China, Africa, etc. the West is able to sustain its level of wealth and power. When a foreign government refuses to yield completely to the west, they are labeled "communists", "terrorists", "extremists", "radicals" and other creative propaganda labels by the highly subjective media outlets. The military is then sent in to either "peacekeep" or to irradicate an "opressive regime", which is often a chosen government. After the "threat" has been eliminated, a puppet government is put in place by the west (almost always the US) in order to insure that American corporate interests will be met. Western media, just like western government and military all are governmend not by (what they would have you believe) morals and objectivity, but rather corporate interests. CNN is as much fiction as it is fact. The media will present its information, but will interpret it in such a manner as to make it appear as thoug the west is always playing the role of peacekeeper and "good guy". The truth is, in the world of global politics, there is no good guy/bad guy - only predator and prey, and the west is the predator and has been since 1492. A little example is the worst case of genocide since the second World War. In the 70's, the US and Canada openly sold arms at a cheap price to president Suharto of Indonesia, who used those arms to slaughter 200 000 civilians from a tiny island named East Timor. The US and Canada knew exactly what the weapons were for, but nearly gave them away anyway because it served their interest. Indonesia was a good ally to have and an abundant source of cheap labour. They wanted to make sure that Suharto's government which facilitated this environment favorable to Western corporations stayed in power. Also, if Indonesia controlled East Timor, the west would be allowed access to the underwater nuclear submarine path off the shores of EasT Timor - a valuable strategic area. Interestingly enough, the East Timor genocide got zero media coverige from the western news outlets. I could cite many more examples of the US, CAnada, etc. exploiting foreing nations, placing puppet governments to serve their interests, slaughtering thousands and covering it all up through a massive hegemony and propaganda machine known as the media. Know that I do not plan on removing myself from capitalism. No person in the right mind would. If you're on top - on the winning team - why abandon that and go back to your old country? If you've joined the predators, why would you go back to being prey? But please, know what your lifestyle is costing billions of other people around the world, and don't be ingorant to what your governemnt is doing by falling victim to its propaganda mechanisms. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Vlav, Interesting post. Deserves a response. First, I think you've gotta stop listening to "Rage Against the Machine" so much. To clarify my stance, I think that the US is the best place to live. It's not perfect, but I like it a lot. I am fortunate, to be born in this day and age, here in America. I could have been born to parents in a village in Bangladesh, or been born 6,000 years ago, pushing rocks for the Pharaoh to build another pyramid. I do not take my good fortune for granted. Capitalism is not an exploitation mechanism. It is an economic theory. Its practice is not exploitation either.......I know that the Nike's on my feet were made by Third World workers for 12 cents a day. What you and others are forgetting, is that in the Thrid World, 12 cents a day is a decent wage. Those Asians making my Nike's are happy to doit for that wage. It seems silly by our standards, but these people are not slave laborers. Since when is paying someone a living wage expolitation? If that Nike factory (and the like) goes away, conditons in those areas will actually get worse. It is true that the US has an interest in who stays in power where. We sell weapons to everyone. Iran and Iraq were fighting each other from 1980-1988, and we sold billions of dollars of weapons to Iraq. Three years later we were at war with them. This goes on all the time. It is not the US's responsibilty to be the global policeman all the time. Clinton just agreed to send Special Forces troops to Africa to train soldiers in Sierra Leone. WHY? Why are we in Bosnia? I can't fucking wait until his term is up - the guy has been a disgrace militarily. The US's responsibilty is to the people that pay the taxes here. Not to stop every civil war, or feed every hungry person. I don't want my tax dollars going there. Good post Vlavovic. Made me think. Matt IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I take a Jesuitical approach. Rampant capitalism as was practiced in the US and other western countries well into the 20th century was indeed an evil thing...look at how the Indians were decimated and the environment was ruined, among other atrocities. Since then the system has become more humane and balanced, and becomes moreso all the time. It's not perfect but it's the best we've got. The quality of life in third world countries is improving, and places like Indonesia which have such huge inherent advantages of resources will eventually become more important, and therefore more scrutinized and accountable, on the world stage. It's places like Chad that worry me. The characteristics of the US which made it great...unfettered capitalism, isolation, rugged individualism, may eventually bring on our decline as the world gets smaller and cozier. Other countries may be in better positions to rebuff our bullying. As far as the Canada/USA onging argument is concerned, it's what you want out of life that would determine which you think best. If you want a unfettered, free market place, with guns and lots of exciting economic ups and downs, and dirty cities, you can't beat the US. If you want a dull but secure life, bad weather, social stability and great cities, Canada's for you. (I'd take Vancouver in a heartbeat). IP: Logged |
