Before I make my point, I want to say that I'm a huge supporter of women in the gym, whether they are overweight and trying to get into shape, professional bodybuilders preparing for contest, or anything in between. But I have to say, nothing irritates me more than women who want to get into shape refusing to lift weights because they don't want to get "too big". Statements like that are ignorant beyond measure! They have no clue as to how difficult it actually is to put on muscle. They act as though if they even look at a dumbell, they are going to turn masculine and bulky. For god's sake, you're not gonna get big by accident!! It takes the proper nutrition, recuperation, supplementation, etc, etc. Instead, they decide to slave away at the stair stepper, ad/abductor machines and abdominal stations in a vain attempt to spot-reduce fat, when lifting REAL weights would raise their metabolism, make them stronger and more energized and give their bodies a nicer shape. Everyone looking to change their appearance should lift, and realize cardio is only secondary! [This message has been edited by vlaovic (edited August 07, 2000).] IP: Logged |

I could not agree more! I also get pissed when people ask me how they lose this (flabby arm, stomach) You have to do the whole thing. [This message has been edited by Vanguard (edited August 07, 2000).] IP: Logged |

Some of them are so retarded that they think if they go near a weight, they'll get huge. If it was that easy, everyone would look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. IP: Logged |

ohhhh this is a HUGE irratant to me!!! I get ZERO support at home for training heavy...wtf is the problem here??? I am not huge, I am getting more muscular sure, vascular sure, stonger...hell yes. "But SKY, do you want to look like the Hulk?" AGGGGGG! Yeah, I'm going to look like the hulk squatting 135lbs...surrrrreee no problem. I get asked frequently "how did you lose the last 10lbs" And when I answer free weights, free weights and more free weights" I get "oh thats just not my thing, I couldn't do that, I'm not a physical person...but I want abs like yours..." And what REALLY burns me is to see the women bouncing on and off the scale before and after their workouts... HELLLLOOOOOOO!!!!!! Women are SORELY undereducated in this matter...we get so much crap fed down our throats through the media...look at the magazines...we are supposed to be tall, willow thin with big tits. Even the 'teen' magazines show this...no real women bodies advertized anywhere. Oh damn - now you've got my bp up...sheesh. ------------------ IP: Logged |

It depends to me. A fitness look is good. VERY GOOD. Most of the time female BB don't look good to me, BUT there are exceptions. ex. I like what I see below. I know I need upload some to some different ones of Ms. Masino, but hey these are good to see again IMHO.

It is unfortunate that women feel and think this way but it will remain till the media shifts their image of women! Every mag you pick up the girls are rails with either no boobs, like the models, or huge plastic ones. And if you do find a girl with some muscle their protrayed like freaks - bench pressing some little scrawney guy! Until I educated myself I too was afraid, not of lifting weights but of lifting heavy weight. Maybe I'm not like most girls but I put on muscle pretty easily - esp my bi's and quads. I finally realized the type of body I had and that I would never look like those 95lb models in the mags - but now I have no desire too! I love to lift - and if the positive image and the right information was out there for everyone to access, the gyms would be packed! IP: Logged |

I currently work out at a local university gym (it sucks, but it's cheap). I've been lifting there for over a year, and in that time, I've seen one, maybe 2 women doing REAL exercises and doing them properly. About 2 months ago, I saw a girl doing SQUATS and STIFF-LEG-DEADS! I was pleasantly surprised, as she cranked out moderate reps with heavy weight and had great form. She was neither huge, muscle-bound, nor masculine. In fact, she was still a little overweight, but well on her way to reshaping her body - much more so than the girls who slave over cardio! In retrospect, I kinda wish I had talked to her, but would have felt stupid congradulating a complete stranger (like Bill Philips or something!) on her efforts, but, that's what I felt like doing. Okay, I am new to this board...I actually just introduced myself last week on the women's discussion board, but I had to respond to this. Okay, usually I just workout at home with free weights because I am really intimadated to lift at the gym in my town- first, because everyone knows everyone and secondly because both men and women look at you like you're crazy for lifting heavy weights. Well today I just said screw 'em and trained at the gym. It was great- almost like I overcame some fear I had. =) There were only 2 other women in there and they were just kind of more or less just walking around and a few men who I chatted with for a few minutes. This board has helped to educate me and become a stronger person. (physically and mentally) Thanks guys! See ya, Trist IP: Logged |

Good for you Trist!! I am nearly the only female in the freeweights in my gym..and the only one I've seen on the squat rack for sure. At least at 5am that is...the weekends is the only time I see anyone else doing squats...men only and rarely. Go for it girl...and welcome to the board. ------------------ IP: Logged |

vlaovic - I love your reply about women saying things like they don't want to get "too big" ......Statements like this is "ignorant beyond measure!" hahahaha You're so right! I have tons of females at the gym saying, i.e. I want your abs & your legs or you're so toned and tight. How do you get your arms to look so good? Well, hello, if I give you tips on what I do and you don't want to try them for yourself, then don't ask me. Don't you agree?! (not meaning that to sound tacky, either) ------------------ IP: Logged |

I completely understand about feeling intimidated. I remember the first time I summed up the courage to even walk into the first REAL gym I ever joined (not the stupid Living Well Lady places). I saw all of these sweaty, gunting scantily clad dudes ...OH MY GOD! I was hooked! (OK I know that sounds female-chauvenistic, reducing you brothas to pieces of meat ) Anyway, it was very difficult for me - you all saw what I used to look like. I kept covered up in big loose shirts and sweats, but as I made progress and the guys saw that I wasn't there to "pick-up" but that I wanted to train, they started giving me tips and all kinds of good info. Nobody made rude comments or were mean to me - I guess they kind of respected me for trying to attain a similar goal. Anyway - I'm never rude and I try to be as helpful as possible ESPECIALLY TO WOMEN and "SKINNY" KIDS - I just want to give back for all the times people have helped me. ..unless ,of course, the individual is an ASS. Then I either ignore or hit them over the head w/45# plate. GOOD FOR YOU GIRL! IP: Logged |

Fintes1, your post doesn't sound tacky at all. It makes perfect sense, and I totally understand your frustration. I get frustrated in a similar way when people ask me how I've lost so much fat (currently @10% bf, pre-bulk cycle @5%, years ago @25% or more). When I tell them cutting calories and exercise alone will never get you that lean, that it takes weight training and severe carbohydrate restriction, they don't believe me and tell me carb-restricted diets are unhealthy. Well I didn't tell them to go on one, they asked me how I got lean! Next time I get asked how to get truly lean, I'm gonna recommend healthy doses of pizza, and a large cheescake post-workout, with beer as a good recovery shake. Maybe they'll like that answer better!? IP: Logged |

Instead of complaining about the futility of changing the opinion of the masses, why don't we try to educate them? If you take the time to talk about it intelligently, most people will at least listen to what you have to say... but you have to be able to back it up. Send them to http://www.stumptuous.com The information on lifting is awesome, and Krista puts many myths to rest. IP: Logged |

I agree with Conan, and I've seen what he's talking about more than once! Like Paul said, it would be good to educate the masses, but the problem is, they don't want to be educated. They want the easy way out. They want "3 minute abs" and they want "exercise in a bottle". The sad truth is, few people are willing to dedicate a part of their lives to heavy weightlifting. Even fewer are willing to eat right - in fact, eating properly is almost a taboo nowadays! I often get ridiculed for NOT indulging in junk food daily, and for being in shape (strangely, it's always OUT of shape, MALE peers that make fun). I am always willing to educate those who WANT to be educated; I just finished corresponding with an indivdual who was looking to attain a very low fat% drug free. I must have spend hours calculating the right diet for him and sending him all the information + directing him to the best web sites. I asked for nothing in return because I enjoyed helping him out. Unfortunatley "ignorance is bliss" holds true in the world of fitness. ps Thanks fitnes1! I'm not competing, I have too many other interests in my life right now. I'm glad you enjoy the post - I was very worried that it would evoke a negative response from the female members, but I see that fit, in-shape women know exactly what I was trying to convey! You know she has some funky ass bodybuilding/porn site don't you? I don't remember what the URL is, but it's advertised in mags and stuff. IP: Logged |
