here are some key stats for the two... i am shocked people can think hank aaron was even to be mentioned in the same breath as the babe.
babe
avg. 342 HR 714 RBI 2210 K's 1330 BB 2056
2b 506 3b 136 Hits 2873 on base .473 Slg .690
games played 2503

now for hank
avg .305 HR 755 RBI 2297 K's 1383 BB 1402 2b 604 3b98 hits 3771 on base .374 SLG .555
games played 3298

oh, and as a pitcher..
babes era was 2.28 94 wins 46 losses and had just a .221 avg against him
he also had a .968 fielding avg. (hanks was better at .982)
he was also 3-0 as a pitcher in the WS.. with a .89 era
babe also had 15 WS homers and a .744 slugging pct in them WS games

babe played in 800 less games.... the man could have had 1000 homers if he played as many games as aaron... babe also had 600 more walks, a looser wound ball... bigger parks... its just no comparison

Hank Aaron can suck it!
He is a bitter quasi-racist man who disrespected the game and the homerun record by hanging around way longer than he should have. I think he was a great player in his prime and definitely worthy of the hall of fame, but there is no way that he deserves that record. He was washed up way before 714 and he stuck around and driped his way to that record to make a political statement. That and the fact that he is incredibly apathetic towards white players, makes me hate the guy.

Hank Aaron has the home run record not because he is washed up and played too long, but because he hit the most home runs.

Babe Ruth dominated baseball like it will probably never be dominated again.

When comparing him to the players of his day, he was clearly far superior.

Baseball in 2000 is very different than it was in 1925. It is not that different than it was in the 1960s when Hank was doing his thing.

It is not really a fair comparison. Having said that, Aaron has set a a HR record that only two players (Ruth and Mays) are within 150 HRs of.

McGwire will probably get there soon (600 HRs)if he gets healthy.

We will probably never see a player like Babe Ruth ever again. Can't say the same for Hammerin Hank. Still, Aaron must rank as one of the game's all-time greats.

Matt

PS Am I the only one enjoying Griffey Jr batting under .250, while the Reds are 10 games out of the wild card?

i respectfully disagree. ruth was clearly
the best player of his era, but the competition was substandard. the game was segregated, not only were african americans
prohibited from playing, there were no hispanics or asians playing in the league at the time. what do you think the nba and nfl would be like if the only eligible players were white? DULL!! segregation watered the talent pool down more than expansion has
in the last thirty years in pro sports. baseball is not as competitive as it was in the 50's, 60's and 70's, but the talent pool is larger.
also, the stadiums were not smaller. ruth was a pull hitter and hit alot of his home runs over a 286 foot right field wall. i grew up in philadelphia when mike schmidt was playing and if there was a 286 foot right field wall at the vet, he would have easily hit another 250 to 300 home runs. he hit many deep opposite field fly balls that were caught at or near the warning track, which was about 320 feet. i know that center field at yankee stadium was a hike, but most of his home runs were not hit ther guys. look it up. ruth did not have tremendous speed either, nor did he have a great arm from the outfield. he was a junkball pitcher in a watered down league. bets player ever? willie mays

Willie Mays was a stud player. I think I'm in agreement on that one. That guy could do it all.

I think in the end Bonds could have given him some competition for that honorary title, but he can be such an ass sometimes.
Willie Mays was and is about as classy as they come.
