I think in a few years Pedro will be number one all time. His ERA is unbelievable. I'm still amazed hes never pitched a no hitter. All the Bo sox need is some more guys that can hit and theyll go far.

guys... babe ruth is the best player of his time.. i dont see how it can be disputed. he is by far the reason the game is what it is now...
did you know, that he had more home runs in a season then ANY ENTIRE TEAM did... that was around 1915.
he dominated on the mound, then at the plate.. he was too good to just pitch... he also liked to party, alot.

but ty cobb beat the shit out of a fan who had one fuckin hand. the guy was saying shit and cobb ran him down and beat the shit out of him... just for that he is number 2 all time...

my favs though
steve carlton and mike schmidt

haha, funny shit havoc, the thing is, they probably had knicknames like that back in the day.

1. Joe D
2. Griffey
3. Hank Aaron

Griffey is on pace to be the best of all time, Joe D with his 56 game hit streak does it for me.

an easy call: ruth.

nolan ryan is the most overrated player ever, that's for sure. there's NO WAY he deserves mention as one of the 3 best pitchers ever.

Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron. They all run a distant 2nd to Michael Jordan.

I thought about including Babe Ruth, but the time difference (the 1920's or 30's) was very different.

I don't know what the Babe could do against Randy Johnson or Pedro. He was, undoubtedly the best player of his time.

Who said Hank Aaron shouldn't be in the top 3? Hank Aaron is the all time leader in HRs and RBIs. plus total bases. Only Ruith and Mays have come within 100 HRs of Aaron. And a lot of babe's HRs were balls that BOUNCED out of the park. (Those used to be HR's back then). Aaron is the all time leader in two major categorie. Top 3 - hell yeah.

I knew someone would object to Nolan Ryan. But with 5700 K's and 300 wins and a ridiculous SEVEN no-hitters, he's got the stats that put him above the others.

To give you an idea - Clemens isn't even close to 300 wins, neither is Maddux, and Glavine just got 200. Those three among them have 10 Cy Young's, but none of them wil approach Ryan in anyof those 3 major categories.

A lot of us missed Ryan in the 70's, but his 383 K's in one season remains the standard.

Surprised no one m,entioned Walter Johnson. He was a 400 GAME winner, and had an obscene 113 shutouts.

I think, also, that Griffey in the Top 3 is premature.

Must we all forget that Babe Ruth was also a magnificent pitcher? He was a fat drunk, but no one can deny his greatness.
By the way, if you want to know who the best ball player of all time is, do some research on the negro leagues.

P.S.: Griffey is greatly overrated...

I would like to agree with a couple of guys and toss Pudge in the mix is he continues his pace as a catcher. You got to think about his "D" also. What catcher hits .350?

I GOTTA AGREE WITH ALOT OF THE PEOPLE ON THIS TOPIC THE BABE IS ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS TO EVER LIVE, BUT HANK AARON IS THE ALL TIME LEADING HOME RUN LEADER. I WOULD LUV TO SEE THOSE 2 SLUG IT OUT WITH MCGWIRE,
GRIFFY AND SOSA. PUDGE IS ONE OF IF NOT THE BEST CATCHER BASEBALL HAS EVER SEEN BUT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THROWING HIM IN AS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE GAME YET!! ONE DAY HE WILL BE. IF HE HADENT HIT MO VAUGHNS BAT TRYNG TO THROW OUT A RUNNER I BET HE WOULD OF HAD HIS BEST SEASON EVER.

Pitchers;Koufax.Gibson.Pedro.
If Pudge keeps improving as he has been he could be the best of all.

Pudge will be the Greastest Catcher ever once he retires, but I don't think I would put any of the modern players yet, due to the fact that their careers won't end in a good while, lets just see what the likes of Pudge and Griffey do in the next 5-10years...To bad Pudge broke his hand, would have been nice to seen 1 Texas team stand some chance in the playoffs....

I watched Nolan Ryan pitch his 298, 299 wins and I must say after comparing those games at his age then to watching Clemens, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Madux, Glavin none of those guys are even remotely close to him....The man could still throw 100mph past 40 years old, not to mention his outstanding stats....He is the top pitcher, with Walter Johnson not much behind him....

best hitters, Pete Rose would have to be there, Ty cobb, Babe Ruth, Joe D, Lou G, Jimmy Fox, and Mantle....

I notice no one mentioned Barry Bonds. While he isn't the greatest player ever, I have to say he is perhaps the best of our generation, running neck and neck with Griffey. The only player in history to be intentionally walked with the bases loaded. Talk about respect.

Romeo,

Ruth also played 20 years plus - did you know he actually played for the Brooklyn Dodgers for a little while after he played for the Yanks?

It is difficult for me to compare pre-WW2 players swith post WW2 players - the game was different from the time of Ruth to the time of Aaron.

Yes the parks in the days of the Babe were larger, but he also gotcredit for balls that bounced out of the park for HRs.

Either way I put Aaron and Mays before Ruth. I guess we'll just agree to disagree.

How can you NOT go with Ruth?

HRs were rarely hit until Ruth came along. He was hitting 30 home runs back then, that would have equated to 120 hrs as far as what the rest of the league was doing.

Not to mention Ruth's time spent as a pitcher b4 he switched over to a full time hitter. Amazing the numbers he put up as a pitcher.

Compare pitchers back then with todays? Those bastards pitched often on 2 days rest, a full 9 innings. How often does that happen today?

And Griffey? Are you crazy? Dude's hitting .236 or so right now in a hitters game. Notice the M's started kicking ass once he left too. He's got solid D and arm, but so do about 7 other fellas equally so in the game.

Hank Aaron was incredible, but just barely beat out Ruth in all time hrs. And don't forget about how Ruth would have fared in a time where more hrs were hit as in Aarons time.
