So was today the first time you have ever done squats?
If you think you are in pain now...wait a couple days and tell me how you feel.
I'm two days out of a good squat workout and I look like a cripple trying to get up to my apartment on the third floor.

Romeo:

Glad you like squats. Just make sure you're doing them correctly. Keep your ego in control, keep weight down and form up. Visit Dr. Squat's homepage for some good info.

Good luck. If done with proper respect for them as a complex family of lifts, squats may become your favorite lift. Great overall mass builder, too. As my training partner says, "If you ain't squattin', you ain't trainin'!"

I remember the first good leg day at bally's. I almost fell down the steps. After that I just took the elevator down. Just something gay about taking the elevator down one floor.

What hurts you guys more? Squats, or stiff leg deadlifts? For me, squats hurt, but those deadlifts kill

stiff legs make me want to puke from tensing my abs so much. BUT...squats put some mean stress on my system and i get some pressure built up in my dome too. kindof works the puke button in the throat. either way im likely to hurl if i catch a good workout. ugh. or forget who i am.

Romeo:

Just want to make sure that you know what is meant by "good form," in connection with squats. Couple of things to keep in mind:

1. Very few guys do squats. Look around any weight room, and there are 10 guys benching, and maybe 1, more likely none, squatting. This means that most people aren't comfortable with them, don't know shit about them, and won't be helpful to you in learning them.

2. You gotta take a long, long time to learn to squat. If you do 'em wrong, they'll fuck you up. I've been doing squats seriously for a couple of years, and am still learning them. Squats are really a humbling influence in the iron game. Respect them, and approach them slowly, with great care.

3. As I say, keep your ego in control. Don't go up in weight until you're really satisfied that you're working at your present weight in excellent form. I work around guys who put 315 or 405 on the bar, then rip out a bunch of sissy squats (like, 2 inches down and up). They might sneer when I strip the bar down to 225 but, hey, I go all the way down, ass to the grass. I go down in control, I pause, and I come up in control. And I'll still be squatting when they're fat couch potatoes.

4. Email me offline at [email protected] if you want to discuss this some more.

Meanwhile, enjoy your squats.

squats do rule, no questions asked.

i did deadlifts yesterday for the first time and they totally kicked my ass. i did a really light weight (135 lbs) to make sure my form was good. holy crap, i did 3 sets of 10 (relatively easy), and i'm sore as shit today. i can't wait until i'm comfortable enough with my form to bump up the poundages...

PS, you are working your calves too - right?!

I saw a pretty little boy (I can say that because I'm probably old enought to be most of your moms! ) in the gym today, nice face, good upper body, good hams and quads, then I saw his calves or should I say, lack thereof ---BLEW IT!

I can really feel those damn stiff leggers in my ass. Last week I tore up my rear so bad I couldn't do a second set or I would have screamed. Do any of you see stars once in awhile when you deadlift?
