I recently installed the zone firewall and since then I have been getting a couple of messages each day saying that it blocked access from the internet and then gives me an ip address. Does this mean someone is trying to hack into my computer? Is there something that I should do about this?

Thanks,
giantset

No need to worry bro...not all of those are potential hackerz. Many times, an internet site or your isp will request an echo, ping...etc request.

You could always download a good portscanner and portscan the ip whom contacted your computer.

Unity, what exactly is a postscanner and what effect would it have on another persons computer. You seem to be the man to ask on this topic, thanx for the prior advise on the firewall

Hey Unity,
Here's another request for some info on a "portscanner." Sounds interesting to me, and I'm sure some other bro's would be interested in seeing who the silly little bastards are that want to hack into our machines!

BUMP!!!

Request number 3 for port scanner info.

And another question. Does a firewall mean that nobody can even see my computer through the web and has no idea I'm surfing or sending emails etc.? Or does it just mean that nobody can hack my PC? Thanks for the info bro.

a portscanner is just a piece of software that scans an ip address's computer for open ports where data is sent and received to the computer. There are standardized ports for many things. A normal computer will have most if not all open, and if you ahve file and print sharing enabled someone can wreak havoc on your machine. A firewall will CLOSE these ports to unwanted intruders, and it will allow you to gain access to your data from remote location if you choose via password etc. These free programs like lockdown and that stuff DON'T block ports, they just tell you an attempt has been made(rather useless)
