Three guys go to a hotel. The bell hop takes their money saying it with be $30. They all give him a $10's. The MGR comes back and tells the bell hop it is only $25 so the MGR gives hime 5 $1's. The bell hop can not figure out how to split $5 between 3 guys so he puts $2 in his pocket and gives the guys $1 each back. Okay so each guy has now paid $9 each for the room. Right! Right! Well when you multiply 3x$9 you get $27 and the bell hop has $2 in his pocket. That only adds up to $29. Where did the other $1 go? IP: Logged |

i hate to ruin your post for you, but since they all payed $9 a piece that is $27. the bellboy took $2 so that is $25. the key is you subtract the 2 rather than adding it to the $27. ------------------ IP: Logged |

hmm..how to explain this in a simple way?? The basic problem is you are comparing different costs. Look at it this way...the hotel charges $25, bellboy keeps 2$,,,so final cost to customers is $27 (25+2). Finally, actual amount paid by customers = $27 (3x9). The confusion comes from the fact of using the original $30 in the calculations. This is not correct because it is not $30 that is paid, but only $27 by the customers. I hope this makes sense...lol.
