its time for this mofo to move on to bigger and better things. time to upgrade from my modem connection to something much faster. which do you guys prefer? i am personally leaning towards cable more but wanted to get other peoples opinion on this. i'm in an area where i have the choice to choose.

It depends on what type of cable it is. If its a two way cable connection, thats probably faster than DSL. If its anything but, incoming cable but outgoing analog, then go with DSL. I just switched and DSL is so much more reliable. The difference between cable and DSL is not very noticable, especially with a fast computer.

I'd go with the cable. Most DSL lines I used are slower than my cable modem. Lot's of variables as to which will give you optimum speed though. You'll be happy with either one since you're upgrading from a dialup.

I live in a high rise and find that DSL is faster, because with cable, I would have to share the line with everyone in the building. With the phone, DSL, it's only me.

DSL is better in the long run and sometimes quicker than cable right now. Cable is broadband which means everyone shares a certai bandwith the more people that get on the slower it goes - bottlenecks. DSL you bought yourself a slice of bandwith that noone can touch. More and more people will be getting both DSL and cable - cable will inevitably slow way down - until they change something.

Your speeds are going to be different with each ISP. I have 2mbit/640k adsl. I've yet to meet a cable user who can download or upload faster than I can, but I'm sure they are out there.

A problem with cable, however, is the 'popularity' effect. The more popular it is in your area, the slower it will be. This is not the case with adsl.

Then you have to look at other factors ... caps, transfer limits, servers allowed, uptime, etc. So it's not an easy call.

Last month I transfered 113gb on adsl.

T1 is faster. they're lighning fast. I've never used or seen a comp with a faster connection. don't know about t3 though. it may be even faster than t1 and t1 is faster than dsl or cable.

true it is faster but its way more expensive for a residence to get them. Unless you have money comen out of your glute injections it will be either dsl or cable for you - get dsl.

Actually, adsl is rated higher than most T1 connections. Obviously a T3 is faster than T1, but they are mainly used in very large WANs and don't really provide the speed you would expect because so many people are using it at once.

If you want to talk speed, start talking about oc3's or oc12's.
