In the past I wanted to be like Mike - any kid that's ever picked up a basketball has probably idolized Michael Jordan. I also admire the courage of COL David Hackworth for many reasons - from his 8 Purple Hearts (including shot in the head twice) to his willingness to speak his mind about the situation in VietNam, although it cost him a chance at ever becoming a general in the Army..... I am also inspired by anyone who has overcome true adversity - there's a kid I know who is paralyzed from the neck down - just graduated college. Whenever I don't feel like doing something, I just think that this kid would give anything to do the "boring" things I do......and he inspires me to really push myself. He is pushing himself so hard that I can't help but be motivated by it. To most people he a quadraplegic -even a vegetable- but to me he is an inspiration. Thanks Tim. Matt IP: Logged |

Speaking of heroes, do you guys remember that sprinter during the '92 Olympics who got hurt midway through the race, but still limped all the way to the finish line? This may sound corny, but I almost cried when I saw that. I wish I had half the heart that guy showed that day. IP: Logged |

I don't belive people should have heros. That might sound stupid at first, but anybody who is your "hero" is just another falliable human being, filled with insecurity and fear just like you. They just did a better job of hiding it than you. Your "hero" is just an image, an Icon. It sometimes helps me to remeber this. There are pleanty of people I look to for insiration or guideance, but I don't put anyone in the "hero" catagory, I look to people I meet in everyday life for inspiration, not some millionaire athlete or movie star. My mom comes to mind, my girlfriend, certain instructors at my college, people like that. ####### IP: Logged |

My Grandpa. He saved lives in war. He treated my Grandma with respect. He took time out of his day to listen to me. He taught me how to get things done. He was kind, smart, and honest. He was real, not some superhero I made up. Not some person I never really met. How do you know they are your heros? Have you ever needed them and they help you???? ------------------ [This message has been edited by Fish (edited July 03, 2000).] IP: Logged |

Blood4blood-I have to respectfully disagree with you. I read somewhere that true courage is not being fearless but rather having the ability to face up to your fears and conquer them. The ones you say are scared and insecure have figured out a way to become successful despite their fears. To me that is something to admire. I know personally I would be a lot farther along in life right now if I had the courage to overcome my fears and achieve what I want regardless of the fear. I have done so to a limited extent and it is the best feeling in the world. Heroes are people with weaknesses and frailties just like us all but they do great things anyway. I think that is something to admire and strive to live up to. Unfortunately there arent many around today. IP: Logged |

Michael Jordan was the perfect hero. He overcame adversity everytime it was staring him in the face. He had no quit in him. Even with a high fever he was able to call upon himself to rise to greatness. IP: Logged |

OK - I think will take the cake for "corny" but, yesterday morning my five-year old woke up crying and visibly shaken. When I asked her what the mattter was she replied that she had had a a bad dream. When I asked her to tell me about she said she didn't want to say. She wouldn't tell my husband either and just sat and continued to shake. I took her in my lap and told her gently that if she revealed the "bad dream" to me then it would "go away" and that it would not return. She finally confided that she had a nightmare about kindergarten (she's going in Sept). I interpretted her nightmare and told her that it was OK to be afraid that her high expectations about her impending scholastic experiences might not be met; but that this would not be the case. I told her that she did not have to be afraid - her teacher would not be mean and she would indeed have a lot of fun new experiences. She seemed to believe me, yet she still was not completely reassured. My other older daughters were nearby listening. My six and 1/2 yr old then came over, stroked her sister's shoulder and said, "It's OK Monika, you don't have to be afraid. You will love kindergarten." To which my younger daughter replied with a great deal of new-found, "I know, it was only a bad dream." That was the last I heard of it. What makes me marvel at this situation is that children THIS YOUNG have the ability to put their own fears (every year - new teacher, new friends, more difficult work, etc, might not seem like much to an adult, but is it really all that different from any changing life situation i.e. marriage, new job, new baby?) aside to comfort and bolster the confidence of another. In my estimation THAT IS A HERO. IP: Logged |

First - my wife, for putting up with my pain in the ass. This can not be easy. For working her ass off to get us a head and always placing me first. Second - my father, for busting his hands and his ass everyday so that I could have a better life. It has never been easy to watch how hard he works. For me one of my greatest days was when my wife and I had enough money to pay off all my parents debts and let them start the second half of thier life. Thrid - Thor, for alway watching over me and telling me that I wasn't fukkin up all the time. For teaching me to place myself and my family first in all matters. For giving the perspective to handle life no matter how shitty it gets. To fight the good fight even if it is a losing battle and that some fight involve alot of pain but that is better than being dead. That your life is the most important thing there is. May he rest in peace. Finally Demo Dick is the man if half his books are true we are all indebt to him. IP: Logged |
