Right on! I have 9 jumps and counting. Couldn't jump at all this year, but can't wait to start again this year. My first 8 jumps were from 3500 - 4500 feet. My last was from 10,500 feet. That one was THE rush. I'm starting again as soon as I get back from my white water rafting trip on the first and 2nd of July. Penobscot River in Maine. Her's a big FLARE to ya's! As for the rest of you jumpers from the nice warm places, I'm jealous. Weather has to be right around here. Keep jumping and stay on target! Pitbull IP: Logged |

Pitbull, Yup, mostly Military jumps, and yes, most of the landing aren't too soft. It depends on heat, humidity, and the slight breeze. On a cold day with no breeze or humidity...you land like a sack of shit Bro!!! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Ranger, I thought that was what you were talking about. All my jumps are civilian. (no need for the 3 point landing) I was slated for my jump course when I was in the Forces, but got bumped off and had to do a 7 month tour in Bosnia. (former Yugoslavia) I really wanted my wings too. Probably why I picked it up on the civie side. Later bro, Pitbull IP: Logged |

I'll give a little insight on Matt's experience...HALO..or..HAHO..!! High Altitude Low Opening High Altitude High Opening I went through a MTT for this...Mobile Training Team....Matt has the real shit though, and much more experience!!! But, from my point of view...there is nothing in this world like being flat and stable 10,000 feet in the air, busting through the clouds at 2am in the morning...totally blacked out in full combat gear, and under O2.....Fuck, I still get a hard on thinking about it....water jumps were cool too!!! Bump for matt the sky God!!!! Ranger IP: Logged |

Bros, My topic has arrived!! How could I justify my screen name if I didn't respond?? 381 jumps. I've jumped from as high as 36,500 feet, at night with an oxygen mask. 6 miles of free fall. I pulled once at 34,000 feet - took me 45 minutes to coast down. I've jumped from as low as 750 feet - static line of course.... Anyone here jump at night? It's weird to see the stars off to your right and left - even a little bit below you.... Jumping in the rain is cool too - soft ground for the landings.....weird to see drops pass you by. I even survived a malfunction - a partially opened chute - I hit the ground at approx 100ft/sec.....but escaped with only a severely broken ankle...... Skydiving is the best rush there is. Everyone should try it. Matt IP: Logged |

Hi Matt, just showed your post to some of the guys here in work. Some of them have jumped and you impressed the shit out of them. Most dangerous thing I've done here is seen some action in South Lebanon with the United Nations. Actually first time I was there in 1988 the UN was awarded the Nobel prize for peace so I supposed I'm a Nobel winner!!. Like skydiving combat can be addictive, as when I've coming home from 'rough trips' I kinda miss the action and the guy's I've been through it with. Pitbull as regards your question on the IRA here and the situation. Well it does'nt trouble us here in the Republic too much. However I'm delighted with the cease fire and the promise of peace it brings. Will Northern Ireland ever be at peace ?, time will tell. However it's wildly believed that Ireland unfreed will never be at peace. Back to the subject now, Matt it was great to see you posting here, I can't remember, are you still serving ?. Later.. I initially got into skydiving in the military. I was in the Ranger Regiment which does a lot of parachute operations. The jumps with Ranger Regt. were all static line jumps, which means essentailly no rip cord to pull; but that a static line is hokked to a cable in the plane which pulls the chute out of its pack tray. Static line is the technique used for airborne operations, where the objective is to get the soldiers on the ground quickly. A typical airborne operation would be an airfield seizure, and in such an operation it is paramount to get on the ground quickly. In airborne operations, the airborne troops do not "push out" from where they land, they simply secure the objective (ex.: airfield) and await a follow on force. In other words, the "lead the way". After some time in Reguiment I got the opportunity to attend "military freefall" school, commonly known as HALO school, for High Altitude, Low Opening. HALO jumps are more akin to civilian skydiving in that there is freefall involved and you pull a rip cord. HALO operations are usually used to "sneak" a recon force into enemy terrain and gather information for future operations. HALO training is available to Rangers, Special Forces, SEALS, some Marine units and a few other Army recon type units. The military is pretty muchthe only place wherer one wil ever jump from heights above 15,000 feet. Thair is too thin to jump from much higher - one can safely go to 18,000 but aboev that is perilous. HALO jumpers often jump with oxygen so as to be able to leap from 35,000 feet or more. The highest jump made by an American was 42,000 feet by a Navy SEAL. 8 miles. There are rumors that a Soviet HALO detachment once parachuted from the unbelievable height of 58,000 feet; which initially sounds like bullshit - but the Soviets were willing to accept training related fatalities so they took some liberties we do not. There is also something called HAHO - High Altitude, High Opening, where a jumper pulls a chute at 30,000 feet or more, and then steers into enemy territory. A man with a parachute, or even a 12 man team, would be undetectable on radar. It can take up to an hour to get down depending on wind. I am a civilian now and I still jump when I can. It is still very much a rush and I emphatically recommend in to everyone. Matt IP: Logged |
