Last year I went on a lengthy trip to Europe to visit family and friends. During my travels I had the opportunity to speak with many people about health related topics. I've always been interested in how other societies view exercise, health and eating habits. By an over whelming majority, the consensus among those with whom I spoke was that Americans are fat, lazy, loud mouths. I was the obvious exception to their conclusion however. To be quite honest, I wasn't prepared for the response I got. Additionally, the foreign press doesn't exactly puff up the American life style. My friends most of whom were in England were convinced that the average American consumes several Big Macs a week. I would love to know how this misconception festered to this point? IP: Logged |

I hate to say it but a LOT of americans are extremely fat. Several big Mac's a week does not seem to be an underestimation- McDonalds does not seem to hurt for lack of business. However, we are the "fittest" fat people on the earth. Do you know how hard it is to find a gym overseas? finding a good one is almost impossible- at least that was the state of things a couple of years ago. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I resent that, especially since I prefer the Whopper over the Big Mac. I am guessing that since we are doing so well economically that this help fosters the idea of wealth and laziness. Let's face it, many americans eating habits are bad due to time constraints or laziness. However, to say we all are fat and unfit is unfair statement. I hope you were able say that every country has its fair share of dead weight. I am also guessing that you witness some of their larger members of society out in public. This gave you a chance to see that they too have fat and unfit people. IP: Logged |

I've been to Europe, including England. I've gotten the impression that most Europeans don't much like Americans in general. In many places, there are lots of restaurants and establishments that are based on American influence. I wonder if since we are the often tourists in other countries that they have a disdained view of our citizens. Unfortunately, telecommunications present views that are often reflected in the words of a nation's citizens. Unless they've been to America and witnessed our country for their own eyes, then they're just reiterating the rumor of whatever media venue gave them that idea. I didn't see many massive monsters or fitness physiques where I went...and I've been to many countries. Englanders seemed to me to be on average, much shorter than we are here. Besides, I remember thinking that all Europeans were small until I went to Germany, where I did see other people who were comparable to my size. IP: Logged |

you should know quite well the ignorance of media backdoc. after that post about pit bulls it was made clear you believe everything you read and hear and thus base your life opinions on such. No offense to the vets out there, but america is a shit hole i am embarrassed to live in. Moe, I'm a veteran and I'm not offended. A lot of shit sucks about this country, it's just that a lot of shit sucks almost everywhere. I hope you find a better deal for yourself though if that's what you want - I've been to a few countries in Europe and I wasn't exactly blown away... but I wish you luck. Where are you headed anyway? Everyones points are well taken. I did see the fat slobs of those other countries, but on the whole they certainly weren't the majority. I agree that finding a decent gym over there is tough. I did take advantage of the opportunity to explain away some of their misconceptions. I think one our biggest foes is the FDA. The classic food food pyramid is way off and Americans have been buying that shit for years. Oh well, just my .02. IP: Logged |

Matt I am going to try amsterdam for a year. I have been there, but only on vacation. Just to much to see in a couple weeks. From there it is to adelaide, south australia. Maybe darwin, in the norther territory. that is where i want to grow old and die. Same problems every where you go pretty much. I don't want to shift the topic, but Moe how do you know I based my pit bull opinion on the media? That's an assumption. The actuality is that I once had neighbors who raised pitbulls. I have also had interactions with people who have had bad experiences with them. I'm basing my "life opinions" on what I've seen, in this case. So I think it's an error to automatically assume that what I'm saying is based on what media has reported. IP: Logged |

well, im a european, and i might have a twisted view on americans. or should i say californians, if i do one thing before i die, it will be to visit calif. and take astroll on venice beach, check out the gyms..and so on... I don't think you would like venice beach that much. There is an outside weight area but there is only a few people there most of the time. Then there are the cool inline dance scate people. There are a group of about 30 black men in riot gear with banners that the white man is the devil and to rise up and kill all the white people etc... actualy they told this mixed girl that she needed to go home and kill her parents. Then there are the people selling all kinds of crap on the sidewalk. You can watch a great game of basketball. It is fun, but nothing like I thought it would be. L8R IP: Logged |

OHHHH man, gotta take a whiz, wait a minute while I lift my stomach up so I don't urinate on myself. Phew. OK, now I'm back. I just got back from McDonalds and got the special 2 big macs for 99cents, plus my fries, shake, and desert. MM good, now its time for some ice cream and watchin a movie while I fart on the couch. AHHH. What a country. Now seriously! Thats probably how some of the westernized countries look at us Americans. What a shame. Yeah, alot blows about the US but still alot doesn't too. You don't see nearly as many people leaving the US as those coming here to start a new life. What about that? As far as people broad brushing all Americans as fat and lazy. What country comes running with no questions asked when some other wanna-be third world country gets into some shit with either another 3rd rate country or themselves??? Answer...Us fat ass Americans! Every damn time!! Sure this country has problems, so does every other country. And if they didn't, then why do we end up getting our borders flooded with so many foreigners seeking citizenship?? Well, I can say this. No matter where you go or who you see, there is always diversity. We may live in different parts of the world, but we are all human. We are raised with certain beliefs and understanding. We may be the country that has founded the Big Mac, but that's because this country was based on people making thier american dream, which allowed freedom to create that business and somone did. Let's talk about the western countries that are getting these Mc Donalds and TGI Fridays, (I reference these two, because I know people who worked there)They make more business there in a day than they do here. What it all comes down to is that if it is there, whether it is food, laziness, fitness or ignorance, people will choose a road, no matter what part of the world you live in. I know many foreign friends that when we first met they thought that we were all the same. Meaning like the people they see on Ricki Lake and Jerry Springer. Those are the shows they air about us Americans in other countries and I can say that it is not an objective or even real look at us. That shit is all made up, pre-planned and fake. (It's showbusiness people not real life) Get to know somone no matter where they are from. Then make your opinion about that person period! Things will look a bit better from that point of view. Ricki Lake and Jerry Spinger offer a poor view of American for the rest of the world. Talk about trash. But it's a fact that a large % of Americans are seriously overweight. I think its around 35% of adults. And the number is growing. So it's not a misconception, it's the truth. Look at the garbage that most of us shove in our faces. McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza, Taco Bell, KFC, Coke, Pepsi, chilli cheese fries, etc. It really amazes me that so many people here eat so much garage. Compound that with the fact that most of us don't eat the good things like fruit and vegs. And so many Americans don't exercise. Lot's of us ARE out of shape, overweight, slobs. IP: Logged |
