My family is bugging the heck out of me to get a pooch. I swore up and down that I would never own another dog after my last two Basset hounds tore the hell out of my house, car, and backyard. All they did was howl all night long. So here are the requirements: Does such an animal exist? If not, then the kids can play with the nieghbors for all I care. Thanks.. IP: Logged |

Wow you want everything! I have been blessed with my dog and now that he is 13 and we are looking ahead the same questions have came up. All will be a little trouble and hyper until they get a few years to settle down. I will never have another golden - she was just to much. Wasn't happy if she wasn't tearing something up. The choices for us have been narrowed by the shedding factor. So it looks like a Dobbie, great dane, or a rat bull terrior(spuds). Boxers are out because of thier teeth. Any dog can be great if you spend the time with them. Everyone loves our current dog. I spent hours with him when we first got his and he got alot of time being social, so he knows how to act around people. They are what you make them. Boxers are an excellent choice (chocolate and white)They are great with kids but are most trainable indoors. They don't bark that much, and they don't dig. Please don't get a ghetto dog like a pit bull or rotweiller. Their only for dope dealers and guys who think they are badass. IP: Logged |

Why not get one of those greyhounds that you can adopt (the ones they put up for adoption after they've stopped being viable for dog races). We got one and we're convinced they're the best dogs for all around pets. I also like collies. They're not terribly smart(which means they can be easily trained in most cases), but they are good-natured dogs and will get along great with your kids. I'm not into pitbulls because they're bred for fighting and that doesn't mix with kids. They have a nasty reputation for turning against owners and kids. Anyone considering owning a pitbull should take into account that many people like me would sue the heck out of the owner and/or have their dog put to sleep if it bit one of my kids (since every single pitbull owner in this country knows the dog's reputation). I personally don't think a dog like that should be bred any longer. IP: Logged |

Hey, guys, enough with the pit-bull bashing! While it's true that they were originally bred to fight and kill, good breeders (not to mention unintentional crossbreedings) have resulted in kinder, gentler puppies in the past few years. In addition, pit bulls are GREAT with kids, which is exactly why they were the Number One family dog in the USA until drug dealers started starving and torturing them in the 1980s to make them really vicious. (Remember Petey from "The Little Rascals"? Was he vicious?) Plus, despite popular opinion, pit bulls are among the least likely breeds to bite humans ... but when they DO bite, it's more dangerous, because they're so damned strong. Go to www.bullandterrier.com for more info, and when you guys buy into the hype that pit bulls are vicious, please try to keep in mind that you're hearing this from the same mass-media knuckleheads who tell you that steroids are more deadly and addictive than heroin. I'm partial to Amstaffs, AKA American Staffordshire Terriers, AKA American Pit Bull Terriers. And my own, Petey, would satisfy all of your requirements ... except the outside-only part. I think that's cruel. A dog wants to be with his family. And would it really be so bad to keep yours inside if it had short hair and didn't chew anything up? I can leave ANYTHING lying around -- shoes, remote controls, etc -- but my dog won't rip, tear, or chew anything other than his chew toys. Where do you live? Because there's a non-profit organization in Chicago that rescues and retrains pit bulls. Emphasis is on making them get along with children, cats, and other dogs ... which sounds like it would be perfect for you. Let me know. [This message has been edited by Ed O. I grew up with two well-bred pits. I tugged and pulled,poked,hit,screamed,kicked,pinched, in short did everything a dumb little kid could do to provoke a bite. NOTHING. I emphasize these were well bred and bought from a reputable breeder who had been raising dogs for twenty+ years. I firmly believe Pits with good backgrounds are the ULTIMATE family dog. However they do require more responsibility than other breeds because they will atack other dogs particularly bigger ones if they aren't raised with them. Pits are great with kids and as far as turning on their owners, I have 6 friends of the family that all breed pits and not one story of that happening. Listen Moe.....I am 29 fucking years old....I grew up in SouthWest Atlanta..the home of dog fights and I WAS a member of The Red Dogs (local spin-off gang from the Bloods). I have seen first hand how dangerous Pits are in fights and in family homes! You can't sit there and tell me that I'm getting all my info from fucking TV. My uncle bred Pits and Dobermans for fighting! I am speaking from experience. I haven't lived in momma's house since my fucking 20th B-Day! Even though I have witnessed the terror that Pits are bred for, I was still clowning around when I said they are "ghetto" dogs! Shit...most of them are!! I'm just trying to warn the man how dangerous these animals are and that he should take caution if he plans on purchasing one. IP: Logged |

You said short hair. Well let me tell you something about Mini-Dachshunds. I breed rare color(dapple,Piebold,Chocolate, and others) Mini-Dashunds and the long hair dachshund has a coat unlike most long hair dogs. It is hypoallergenic and DOES NOT SHEAD. They weigh about 10-14lbs. The Female tend to be better for training and pick up things much quicker. There are a couple of boys 5years and 10 years old that live next to me and when I get home everyday they come and get the dogs and run and play with them every day. I have one male and 2 female and puppies about every 7-8months. When they grow up with kids they are great. The will not bite!!!!!!!!!! I or anybody can pull their tale, ears, or anything and they will only cry. Now if you train them to be agressive they will!. People also laugh when they see a 250lb guy walking with hit 3 little dogs. Also you get all the girl attention and most people say I have never seen a dog that color or that pattern. People say the are wuss dogs, but my male is going to get killed some day, because he will attack any male dog that comes on my yard. They were raised to root a badger out of there holes. A bager is a tough ass wild animal and it will run from these little dogs, but if a lab goes after a badger the badger will not run and will kill the lab. Strange huh? IP: Logged |

I love Pits but I feel dogs are like food, everyone has their own tastes and what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. The fighting between two of our guys in a post from a guy simply asking what type of dog would we think best suite his family is pretty stupid when what we should focus on is his question not. I merely offered my own personnel experience and ask that cm do some research as to what breed he likes best and will feel comfortable with. I like all dogs I am a dog lover and although am partial to Pits I realize they aren't the breed for everyone. Now if FlexB says he was joking I can take a joke no need to freak out and start a fight expecially on a thread like this. Save that stuff for the fight threads not the looking for Lassie ones. Having owned several dogs during my life I would have to say the Border Collie would be your best choice. The breed is very intelligent and trainable. If I had the time and patience I would get one. My wife owned three of them while she lived at home in England. My personal favorite, however, is the German Shepherd. I have a four year old, 82 pound female. She is extremely intelligent, very protective and loyal. The dog loves children but is a bit aggressive toward some other dogs. IP: Logged |

i have a taco bell dog and a bandog (amer pit bull/neo mastiff) the taco dog is good with kids barks at strangers doesnt make a mess or dig doesnt howl LOL. sometimes tries to bite the bandog lol her whole body is the same size as the bans head. the bandog is extremely playfull and friendly towards everyone and guests but digs and barks and chews alot but is a great theft deterrant so its worth it since i live in a high crime area. i like pits i had one before and it was the most loving dog ever . they turn mean if you abuse them especially if you chain them to a pole or tree and leave them like there some kind of prisoner or slave im sure a person would go crazy if they were treated like that too.
