![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i've resently gotten into napster.com to downkload music. i've been told that very soon you'll be able to download movies through a simular format that napster uses. i have a 56K but it takes anywhere from 30 min to an hour to download the music files. movies and trailers take too long so i don't even bother with them (yet)what are some of the things that i should consider when making a decision. right now i'm leaning toward the cable (broadband) what are the pro's and con's between each? any personal preferences out there? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well, in a really small nutshell...T1 and Cable are going to be virtually identical. Both cable and DSL offer ruffly 10 mb download and roughly 2-3 mb upload. You share a cable line with the rest of your neighborhood, and a DSL line is dedicated. However, the further you are from the switchbox, the slower the DSL line. I am on cable now, and I prefer it. I am on the computer usually when others aren't so I don't experience the slowing when the line is being shared (peak times). Prices are roughly the same, so its really up to you. Download times on both DSL and T1/cable are really dependent on the remote site. If you go to a slow site, you will experience slow downloads. If you go to a site that can handle the bandwidth, it will be a fast download. I don't use Napster, so I can't give you any metrics, but I'd say on average, on a decent site, it takes me 2-3 minutes to download a 4 MB mp3. On a fast site, it can take me less than a minute. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What up XL. Funny this should come up - I have DSL at work and just this morning had it installed at the pad. I prefer DSL way better to cable only because of the way cable slows up when more people get on it, and if it is slowing now - you know there is just gonna be more traffic as people continiously add cable hookups to there computers. As for napster it takes me about 3-4 mins a song. Slopain IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i've read that the cable will take longer and longer as more and more people begin using it. as for the DSL, what type of equipment would i need? i'm using a 300mhz processor with a 56K modem. when i'm told i need a dedicated line, is that the same as another phone line for my computer only (which i have) or is it a special type of line with a modified phone jack? i'm not too computer savey as you may be able to tell and i've been looking around on the internet lately and everything is explained way over my head. one last thing. would the DSL serve as my internet povider? thanks guys! ![]() ![]() ![]() Cable is great for now but will suck in the future as more people get it. T1 is very expencive, DSL is your best bet out of the three. L8R IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a cable modem and I love it, much faster than 56k, which is what I had before. As far as Napster, I'm pretty sure it also has something to do with the speed of the other persons computer also, icould be wrong though. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() yeah, napster posts the speeds and bit rates so you know which to download from and which to not. it'll say 14.4 or 56K or T1. . .i'm sure you get the pic. yeah, i think i'm leaning toward the DSL now. but it will depend on the equipment i need to buy. i have media one where i live and am ALWAYS having trouble with them. plus if i'm not mistaken with DSL you're always online. i'll never have to wait to sign on again. anybody know about the service provider question? or is anyone able to explain how that aspect of it works. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You are always on line with cable also. And as far as it slowing way down in the future I believe that is being blown out of proportion. I do not see it affecting the speed that much. It cost's me the same each month as my second phone line used to. Cable!! Besides, I own some ATHM stock so you would be helping a bro out. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() dsl! With dsl you are on all the time also, it is similiar to cable except you are guarenteed a certain bandwidth. XLAll you need to do is call up flashcom, earthlink or whatever and they will set you up, They throw n the dsl modem for free so all you do is pay the monthly (around $40 right now)As far as dedicated phone line - you could just use your current dial up line, nothing fancy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i phoned 1 800 teamdata (ameritech) and asked about the DSL. sounds like a great deal. fast, better, cheaper service. only one problem. it's not offered where i live yet. there's an ameritech office right up the road, what's up with that. so i guess i'm gonna have to go with cable. i might wait just a couple more months to see if they come around on this. my area has grown something like 400% in the last 2 1/2 years. so i would think ameritech has been getting a lot of calls on it for this area.
