There were three pretty big power lifter types at my gym tonight, never seen them before, but I'm new to this gym anyway. Well, these guys did a pretty impressive squat routine, and then started to do bench. The weird thing was, that they produced this big-ass heavy chains (2 sections each looked to weigh at least 40 - 50 lbs.), hung them from the collars and then started benching. They didn't look like the type of guys who'd be out to show-off or impress people either. The only thing I could think of that they were doing was using the chains to make the bar a bit more unsteady, which would force them to use more support or synergistic muscles during the movement. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this? I've seen atheletes squat while standing on a pendulum-like board to improve balance (picture a roller with a board on it, and someone standing on the board doing squats), this seemed to be based on the same principle. For those who are curious these guys were doing the chains with what looked to be 250 on the bar for low reps (sets of 3-5 reps). E2, maybe you should order a set of chains for your new gym! Its a powerlifting method...part of the Westside barbell method. I recommend anyone research it even if your not into powerlifting....lots of interesting info and ideas on how to really increase your lifts [This message has been edited by Capt'n_Crunch (edited April 24, 2000).] IP: Logged |

its a westside method indeed. when the bar is on your chest some of the chain is on the floor and as you begin the positive portion of the lift, the chains get heavier. this keeps the resistance high as you lock out the bar. IP: Logged |

It's for progressive overload! My buddy is Nationally Ranked power lifter and does lot's of weird shit. At 148lbs will bench the shit out of 90% of the people on this board. and that's NOT a flame to anyone! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info. I was wrong about how heavy the chains are. They do look heavy, but they are at the most 40lbs combined. I may have to try this method. IP: Logged |

I just happend to run across something very similar on Charles Poliquin's site(the links). I haven't seen the Westside barbell but it's probably the same science behind it. Here's a description and a link to the site. The Ful-Speed (FULcrum compensating Strength and Power Enhancing Exercising Device) Unit produces a secondary resistance engagement at the point in an exercise where the greatest muscle force is concentrated in lifting the weight. This results in greater muscle contraction intensities for PEAK CONTRACTION ACTIVATION. l8r IP: Logged |
