Just got back from my dermatologist the other day, and she adviced me to seek out the real sun...she says that tanning beds are cancer coffins, that the price you pay to look dark and tan at 28 may just be monetary but the price you'll pay at 40 is wrinkled to the max with melanoma setting in by age 60. Which leads me to ask: Why is white skin considered so unattractive in our culture...other cultures don't have our fascination (with the exception of Latin America) with the sun?

Symphonic musicans are told to stay out of the sun completely, so as not to loose thier "studio pallor".

Dermatologists don't know everything. To them everything is carcinogenic...LOL... They need to take a vacation...

ryan---not here to flame you but obviously you dont know much about tanning beds. dr.'s call it phototherapy and charge about 80$ per session to treat skin ailments and arthritus. if dont right and in moderation it can actually be good for you. ------------------

quote: The operative word here is excessive. Dermatologists say that any time spent tanning is carcinogenic. I know what type of people dermatologists are, so I am saying this with experience. It takes a special kind of med student to become a dermatologist and they definitely need a vacation.

I heard an ad today on the radio, and there's a place here that claims you can tan in three visits without any carcinogenic side effects, and get a deep dark tan. Something about UVA rays that aren't nearly as harmful as UV. Anyone else heard of this yet? I'm going to call and find out more. Muscle without a smooth tan.....especially in summer at the beach......well....it sucks in comparison. delts2 ------------------

I've visited the bed twice in the last month, and as long as I have some sort of a tan line I'm happy. I primarily do it just to keep the acne under control.

I'm still doing research and it's not complete, but UVA rays can actually be beneficial to your skin I believe. Make sure to use a tanning bed with 99% UVA to 1% UVB ratio. It's a balance between to much and to little sun.

Frackal, I called the tanning salon and they said that if the UVB rays were only 1% then there would be no point. Whether the girl knew what she was talking about is a different story. She said the beds there are at least 50% UVB. ????? ------------------

Well Kartchick (???) the beds I use, "Dr. Mueller" Orbit beds, have a UVA/UVB ratio of 99%/1% I'm waiting for nvr2big to post on here, he's pretty knowledgeable.
