I've got a friend that is into smoking dope. The problem is that he seems to have some kind of addiction. I thought marijuana was not supposed to be addictive? Is it only a psychological addiction? If so, how do you break it? He claims that he is not able to get through a day without smoking up. I think that depression may be an underlying factor. Has anyone ever seen this type of thing before?

Seriously, it's a friend! My problem is beer, but that's...another story.

Marijuana is neither psychologically nor physically addictive. Simply put, your friend is a weak minded pawn. Not even worthy of sacrifice. Beer, however, is another story.

<----- Ain't nothing wrong with smoking eh' day all day. Im fried, making jungle tunes right now. If your buddy is depressed, why does he/she still smoke con? It only makes the condition worse. One of my close friends went through that depression/weed/coke/E/drugs/prozac thing. He just sticks to beer now. peace

Marijuana can be addictive. There's no doubt about it. For the last 8 years I've smoked it just about everyday. After awhile it just becomes second nature to you. I've been clean for about a month and a half now. I never considered myself weak minded. I've done coke on quite a few occasions and never became hooked. I was under the impression that weed is harmless, like many others, but doing it everyday can lead to an addiction. Your mind and body just get used to having it everyday and it can become a problem. I see no harm in doing it in moderation, like everything else, but please don't fool yourself, it can become a problem. I'm gonna give it another month or so without it and hopefully get the job I'm going after, after I become CCNA certified. I know I'll smoke in the future but not to the extent that I have in the past. Basically just a weekend thing to relax. In my book, it's superior to alcohol, but it can become a problem just like anything else. Moderation is the key. Damn I wish I had a joint right now, but I digress.

hey satanic goat slayer, you're very wrong buddy. Id go recheck that info. marijuana *IS* There's a big difference, and the latter is much harder to break. (just like for heroin) Explain to him what you feel and tell him to chill out on the dope.

BloodDrinker, Don't get me wrong, I'm not flaming you, but you went to a rehab for pot addiction? Just pot and nothing else? I have never heard of that. Quitting pot is NOT like heroin. No comparison, not even close. Anyone know any junkheads? Not many can quit for good. I believe the % is like under 5% who successfuly kick that shit. If someone gets hooked on junk more than likely they will do it until they die. Anyone can quit weed. ------------------

pot is a mental habit...worse if you roll your j's with tobacco. My BF was addicted for a while and now can smoke his weed like me; once a month or so. Maybe a little more for him if out pothead bass player comes over. He isnt very good at saying no. The place where we used to jam at was owned by some good friends of mine. Nicest guys inthe world, but also the most uninspired. Couldnt getmotivated to save their lives....they've all been pot smokers since they were like, 11. They're all in their late 20's now and I think one of the 5 of them has asteady job. LOL...

Your bud just has to have the will power to stop and lay down the pipe. There is no physical addiciton, it's all psychological. You smoke once every month or so and it is a great experience, you smoke everyday and it gets old. (Havoc will disagree with me on that). By the way, he is probably enjoying the last of a vacay. ------------------

Thanks for all your replies. Kat, my buddy seems to be a lot like those guys you described. No motivation, no steady job. We may laugh about it, but those are the reasons I'm starting to think he has a real problem. I mean, how long can he go on like this? He's a smart guy too, so it seems like a waste. And he's always bumming money from me. [This message has been edited by Stan O'Zolol (edited March 17, 2001).]

i think depression is one of the big side effects of dope, especially when you aren't stoned you become very moody and agitated. your friend will need to lift his self-esteem before he can give up his blanket,Mary Jane.

If you are not willing to give up the beer do not expect him to give up the weed. Peace

I've smoked weed for a little over 20 years now, not to the extent I once did, but I still take a pinch in the morning and usually one at night. It's very much a part of my daily routine and I love it, although I am aware of the eventual consequences. But I am neither depressed or feel like I have any "sickness" of any kind. Funny though.....seems to me like the most fucked up people I've ever met......don't get high. LOL ------------------

Stan - I don't give a fuck what anybody says. I've experienced it, therefore I know. They say smoking dope is not physically addictive, I agree. Mentally, it is. I started off by just smoking on the weekends, then it escalated to every day, but only at night, now it's daily, any time. As one other said, it's just like second nature to me now. A joint is like a stronger cigarette to me. At the beginning of this year my resolution was to stop smoking pot. I went about a month without it. I was so bored. Boredom was my biggest problem. Once I take a hit of a little dope, I mean I don't have to get trashed, but it just seems to take the edge off, and the day just seems so much brighter. I go home for lunch to take a few puffs and on the way back to work I see beauty everywhere around me, the sun, the clouds, the birds, it makes me happy. Take it easy on your friend, it's better than alcohol. I've experienced that as well. I'd say your friend is just depressed, and dope helps him with the boring day to day life. No worse than a person that takes prozac or any other mind alternating drug. No different, it just happens to be illegal. |
