I talked to the Marines recruiter tonite and he was very convincing. We had a good time too. He's super cool. I'm completely torn between the Navy and the Marines. It's a 50/50 split.
Here's what I think I'm going to do.....I will join and take college courses while I'm in and get my 4 year degree and become and officer and teach military history to recruits. That would be a kick ass job. Now I just need to decide which service.

I am in paramilitary training right now that some marines and army 18th zulu compared to the military and going off of this I would choose NAVY. Plus employers think the navy is more professional and not a bunch of jarheads like the marines even though they are not. Choose navy if you are intelligent if you like physical abuse choose marine . Allthough will provide a great base of discipline later in life. But choose Navy being from WI. I myself am from MN and Have many friends in the Marines and guess you would be best suited for the Navy compared to them. PS I Am drunk off of 2 40 oz. steel reserves.

you know what i'll say SG. Marine all the way. The majority of those in the Navy hate it or cant wait to get out. those who are in and stay in, do so because they have family obligations. as far as you taking classes in the military, its damn hard. my room mate was in for 4 yrs and took one class..thats it. constant deployments and difficult schedule commitments make it difficult to have a set routine.
we had the opportunity to take some classes on the ship but sleep and the gym and food was my priority. plus 12 on 12 off doesnt facilitate studying.
if you are really serious about college, you could 1 of 2 things. 1.) go in and serve for the experience of it. learning independence and leadership skills as well as maturing. 2.) you could study and get your degree and go in after you graduate as an officer.
get on i.m sometime or email me and i can let you know from my experience, try to help you get an idea of what the corps will be like. peace

Sailor Girl If you want to be an officer it would make alot more sense to go to ROTC and eliminate alot of shit you have to go thru.
Have you had any ROTC experience in HS?
BTW if you dont like people yelling at you I'd stay away from the Marines.
Just remember when they are paying for your school if you dont meet a certain GPA or performance level they can yank you out of that particular program at any time.
Dont make a hasty decisoion. No matter what the recruiter says the programs are not going to go away or fill up on you overnight.

SG... If you seriously want to be an officer, then you need to look into ROTC and go the college route.

ok look, first you are a female so you are not going to go to an infantry unit that deploys like crazy and it is hard to maintain a set schedule. All these people telling you this and that are full of shit they either used to be in or are telling you hearsay..listen to the currently active duty members on this board...BigBuck is the only one I know of and myself...you are ggoing to get the same type of education in the no matter what branch you go into, it works like this...you get stationed say on Camp Pendleton Ca. there is going to be a Education center on the base that the surrounding colleges send a liason to. You hook up with them and you can take your classes right there on base, or drive to the college. This is the case with every Marine base. I am in NC and we have a rep all the way from a University in Boston that has an office set up here. We push education here, I am an instructor in my field and I make my student go to the Edu. center and find out the programs available to them. So college is not a problem in the Marines. If you join the nave you are not gonna have the satisfaction I think you would with the Marines, military wise. If you take there uniform off you can't distinguish them from a normal civilian, a Marine will always stand out. bottom line join the Navy and you will put some blue dickies and a blue shirt, live on a ship and call everyone by their first name, join the Marines and you will be a well diciplined military professional, with a 100% guaranteed oppootunity at college. and don't bother with ROTC it doesnt stand for shit in the Marine Corps, in fact i think we made fun of those guys...email me if you have any questions

I'm leaning towards the marines, but Marine bootcamp is shitloads harder than Navy bootcamp. Also Navy bootcamp would be much closer to my home so it would be easier for my parents and friends to get down to my graduation. Marine bootcamp is in South Carolina. That's not a huge issue though.....I'm basically just intimidated by marine bootcamp.

I can understand that totally, but what the hell it is 3 months and thats it, I am not gonna tell you it is easy but it is so worth it... and it is not as hard as you think...what you hear about or see on tv is all the worse part they don't mention the all the classroom and prac-ap stuff the professional instruction...I would do it again in a heartbeat...where would you like to get stationed at?

SG...I have no clue about either service area.

My guess, would be to choose the one that will enable you to reach your future goals/career.

marine boot camp may be intimidating but not excruciatingly difficult. it will be a challenge to you both mentally and physically but when its done, you walk away with so much pride and self confidence. from what i hear about navy boot camp, from my squid compadres, is that you primarily learn to gaggle around in a group(march) and fold all your gear that they give you. you learn where to mark your hankies and how to fold your choneys. i believe they learn how to not shoot themselves in the eye with a pistol too.
marine boot camp you will learn to march, learn to move fast, be efficient, learn to fire multiple weapons and the specs on them. learn first aid, how to stay alive in the event of nuclear/biological/ or chemical hazard. how to work as a team (no army of one here), meet your swim qualification, etc.

there is alot of physical involved but alot of learning and classroom time as well. once you are there a while you learn how the days are actually structured and that its not just the drill instructors getting crazy from sun up to sun down. (yes they have a schedule to follow)

i know many people who are on the drill field and they are people just like you and me. they are taught to push people to their limits to build confidence and give insight into the capabilities each person has.

i think you would like the marine corps more over the navy.
just my opinion though. sorry to keep jumping in but points are brought up that i want to comment on.

successful and intelligent? LOL

sorry 2thick, i must disagree with you on this one. though the navy "tests" for thier promotions, it certainly doesnt make them particularly intelligent. as a whole they are quite large and the majority of those in are doing jobs that dont facilitate thinking. officers do all the thinking in that outfit. physical fitness is a "by the way" type of attitude.
ive been around so much navy that i can comment on this quite confidently. though they look decent in their dress uniforms, you still cant polish a turd. the attitude among them is laxed and undisciplined. motivation is low. very few truly care about what they do and hence it reflects in the junior ranks. its not a good atmosphere for one who wants to truly experience military life.

not all marines are grunts. i was an avionics technician, collateral duty inspector (QA) and low power qualified. which means not only did i say whether the plane flies or not but i can go in and run the engine to see if its fucked up. not bad to sit in a 39 million dollar aircraft at the age of 24 while its turning.

the level of responsibility is considerably higher and so is the quality of leadership in the Marine Corps.

Semper Fidelis.

That toughness crap wears off. I have had to whoop a couple Marine asses in order to prove that the branch of service your in doesn't determine how tough you are. Why not the Air Force? We'll treat you the best you won't be living in tents and or on boats you'll be treated like a human being and you'll be able to find a decent job when you get out. Remeber the Air Force NO ONE COMES CLOSE!

most of the guys i knew would just screw the airforce girls to prove that point opposite.

just playin. its not even about toughness. its about a disciplined lifestyle. learning to take and give orders, see the world. yes there are sacrifices, thats what makes the pride so sweet.

air force is a decent way to go without getting "too military". most other branches refer to them as "civilians with uniforms". if one is hell bent on civil service that could be an option, but for a military experience the choice is clear.

NOTE TO READER: THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION...I AM NOT BASING IT ON KNOWN FACTS, ETC., SO IF I GET SOME "BADKINS" IS BEING A KNOW-IT-ALL, YOU'LL JUST BE SHOWING YOUR IGNORANCE!!

S_G...although I have no desire to join the military...from what I've read/heard/seen/known, etc., I would go with the Marines. I believe they are more "hardcore," more "intense."

I also believe it is all more mental than physical...being female, and a great looking one at that, I have a feeling you'll take your fair share of shit. But, when you're done, you will know how strong you really are!!

I wish you the best of luck in any and all of your choices!!

I would take some more time to review your goals and needs. Each branch of the military has its pros and cons. Make your decision based on your personal prefrences and desires rather than listening to the promises and pitches of a military recruiter.
Match your skills and talents with that of the two services and see which one would suit YOU more. Serving your country is honorable no matter what branch. What matters most is your dedication and pride in what you do and the belief in your country.

SG if you want to be an officer join the reserves and get your school done.

In todays military you'll have a real hard time going to school while in Egypt or some far away place. In either branch your first year you'll be in bootcamp-mct- and then your MOS school which can be up to a year long. While in a student status you'll not be allowed to have a car in most schools. If you signed for 4 year you first year is gone and your no down to 3 years to go to school. And while your not deployed you'll have to be very on target to get your school done. Most of the time you'll be working long hours and standing BS duties.

If your still set on going active take this advice for either service. Figure out which type of degree you want. If you pick a certain degree and then pick your MOS school you'll be able to transfer credits form your MOS school. Their can be alot of credits for some MOS. Also only the army can guarantee an MOS. The navy and Marines real lie and sorta put you in a certain MOS " FIELD ". The key word is field for example legal admin clerk " FIELD " includes legal admin which is ok but then thiers plain ass admin or OB " Office Bitch " The military does this because of the word game they can play to get you to sign.

If you think about Navy ask about TAR. TAR is a mostly land based program that will give the best time off to go to school.

To end most Male Marines only like female Marines for one reason. The term WM or woman marine also stands for worthless marine of waste of money.

regular like who? are military servicemembers irregular? apparently you arent from the U.S. but do you remember WWII? those "irregular" people you speak of protected OZ from Japanese invasion. General McArthur being one of the most famous "irregular" people down there.

College is a good option but the military can be a good experience as well, by easing the financial burdens of college and allowing an individual a chance to grow and learn about one's self. Not everyone is ready to be immersed into college and knows what degree to pursue, this is a productive means of taking time out to think about it instead of burning up time and racking up student loans.

Do you really think your tough enough for the marines? You already question yourself based on what you know about their bootcamp...

My 2 grandfathers who fought in world war 2 one was a grunt working on engines for the navy the other was a navigator and part of the first POW group freed. The POW one was smart enough to get an education when he got out since he didn't want to be Uncle Sams grunt again if he didn't have too...Go to school, get into ROTC and learn more about the world through an education before you decide you want to play GI Jane and take on the world...Your alot smarter then this shit so I can't believe you are allowing yourself to worry about all this crap.

yes, it is. warfare is more complex. the military needs intelligent personnel. the threat is not gone just because there hasnt been a global scale war in half a century. no point in closing up shop just because everyone has been "behaving".

Army all the way! Why? You get promoted quicker. The Air Force takes care of people and they chill, the drawback is promotion is hard as hell. The marines or navy, I'm sure you'll have guys trying to get at you constantly. I bet you'll be going right over to Great America (Six Flags) often if you choose Navy. I used to live in Kenosha.

Why dont you toss a coin like you potentially toss your life away with either of them

Keep the trend going

SG,

I was an officer in the Army, and I highly recommend you go that route, in the servuce of your choice. I did my service, have a college degree, got the college experience, and since I got out of the Army, I am extremely desirable to employers.

Either way I commend your desire to serve your country.

yup , liberator said it right...go ahead and sign your life away. be told what to do every waking hour of the day. forfeit any use of your mind like all the rest of the machines that enlist. all the while chasing the dream that you are "serving your country" in these times where there will never be another war. Why the hell dont you just go to college and get a real job , or are you too scared you wont be able to make that decision on your own?

If you trust the recruiter, you are in for a SURPRISE!
Sounds good, but it's different out there in the bush.
I have been following close, and have read your posts before. Finish school, then go to the service as an officer. You have 2 choices: Listen to my advice or
learn the word surprise!
Oh, by the way, the recruiters job is to be "cool" so that he can recruit outstanding people such as yourself!
Think about it.
I must admit though that you are very persistant and that you would not have a problem in the corps.
Just think about it.
peace!
