I don't recall who exactly suggested that I pick up a copy of Anthem, but THANK YOU. I have not voluntarily read any books pertaining to anything besides computer programming in probably over 5-6 years. I'm glad I read this one. What do you suggest I read next? The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged? Any other good books written by Ayn Rand out there? I don't believe it. I'm reading fiction and enjoying it. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It was me, your friendly Objectivist advocate here at Elite! I'm glad you liked it...like I said, it's a good "taste" of what Rand/I thought/think!! 'Atlas Shrugged' is a bit longer, but you will be 1000% more satisfied after reading it...read it now... After that comes 'We the Living," her very first novel that she wrote when she got here from Russia...but since her style wasn't very clear, I'd wait on this one...then 'The Fountainhead,' and then any non-fiction you can get your hands on!! ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Wow, I can save over $10 if I buy the hardcover online. I'll do that. "Atlas Shrugged is a big longer." It's over 1,000 pages. Please don't say "a bit." =) Thanks again, Badkins. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

"Naked" by David Sedaris! It's the most hilarious book I've read in ages.

Warik...whenever you're ready to hit the non-fiction stuff, just let me know... 'Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal,' and 'The Virtue of Selfishness' in my opinion would be right up your alley! Here I go again, promotin' my philosophy!! Out of curiousity Warik, have you taken a look at what the Libertarian Party has to offer?? Again, if you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me! ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Badkins, It might be a while considering the size of my next two books and the fact that I haven't been that big of a reader for a while, but when the time comes I'll be right back here to bug ya. I haven't looked too hard at the Libertarian Party. From what I've read, Libertarians tend to side with Republicans on most issues, but I could be totally wrong because I haven't read much. Know a good online general resource for such information that doesn't present me with 20 pages on why Libertarians support a particular issue? -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Warik, Zinn, "People's History of the United States" not bad. Also try "Wealth and Poverty of Nations". (Don't know the author, and don;t confuse it with "Wealth and Poverty".) Both good reads ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Warik...as far as Libertarianism is concerned, I personally find it easier to understand something by first reading as much as possible from their enemies, i.e. Republicrats and Demublicans, LOL! After that, take a look at their main platform... They are not "Objectivists," hell Rand didn't even really support them--she didn't vote period--but they're the only one even near my ideas... My 2 cents...ol' Ferrus is proud one, too...let's hit him up! ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I read the Fountainhead and found it really really boring and repetative - it could have had at least a third of the book edited out. ------------------ Build a man a fire, he is warm for a day. THEY ALL SUCK--IN COMPARISON--TO 'ATLAS SHRUGGED!' IF YOU READ ANY AND ALL OF THEM, ESP. 'WE THE LIVING,' AND 'THE FOUNTAINHEAD' WITHOUT FIRST READING 'ATLAS SHRUGED,' EVEN THOUGH IT WAS WRITTEN AFTER, YOU WILL NOT BE TOTALLY 110% SATISFIED... IF YOU STILL DON'T HAVE A TASTE FOR THE FICTION, TRY THE NON- THAT I MENTIONED...THE STYLE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT... ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

IF you made it through Rand and havn't wanted to slash you wrists, then may I suggest Kafka. He is such a pleasant read. NOT. Grotto. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'll pass. Just placed my order through B&N online for Atlas Shrugged. I hear that the audiobook version is 47 CDs (~60 hours). Looks like I won't have to worry about being bored on Friday & Saturday nights anymore. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

If you're going to spend that much time reading a book, read War and Peace. I mean how many pages does it take to explain her philosophy? Aside from the aforementioned it's all fluff and fiction. I've read Atlas, and the Fountainhead, and liked them both, but in retrospect I probably would have skipped one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I hated Zinn, we were forced to read it a lot during class last year. Some was interesting but the majority was just way to boring for my taste. Whats your favorite genre Warik? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Bigschweeler...I'm not trying to preach here, but really, if you did not take well to the fiction, try the 2 non-fiction titles I recommended above...after reading some of the technical philosophy she has to offer, the novels seem more relevant, IMHO... Kafka's OK, Camus's OK (if you're into Existentialism), I like Dostoyevsky (sp.?), but haven't touched any Nietzsche, but am planning on it soon... I'm glad we've got so many lit. fans here, I thought I was one of the only ones... I'm actually planning on teaching high school English when I get of school for those that didn't know... ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Badkins - it's not that I didn't take well to her fiction or that I didn't enjoy it. I'm merely saying that she was a little long winded in both. Definately read Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevski and The Brothers Karamazov. Those were two of the best books I've ever read. The only bummer is that you have to read translations. Also read some Tolstoy if you have a chance. Anna Karenina is an excellent work of fiction. As for the existentialists, I like some Camus, and Sartre, but Nietzsche is more interesting. Also if you're intrigued by religious philosophy, read some Kierkegaard. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
