Whenever there are posts that contain words like "homie" or "dat"..et al, I have to translate to middle class whitebread English.

Now, my question is this: It is my apparently misguided understanding that this "street" form of english became originally popular amongst somewhat uneducated, socioeconomically challenged folk.

However, intelligent and educated people like Moderator, havoc, Slopain and such use this slang with verve, and in fact seem to switch their speech back and forth from slang to middleclass English like it is two different languages.

So, if indeed, it is a language originated from a misrepresentation of spoken English, how do you know how these words are spelled?

for example: I was always under the impression the word, which I believe you guys spell "homez" was spelled "holmes"...

After reading a lot of old African American literature in many of my English classes, I've learned to ENUNCIATE VERY WELL! Try reading some slave narratives from the 1700s--it's straight forward, you just have to imagine someone speaking instead of the written word and you'll be fine...but with this new form of "Ebonics"--not that it's a language, more of a 'genre' if I may be inclined to call it that, you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I would be half the time it's made up word to word...

Just my 2 cents...

I personally "sound" like in idiot when I try to type in that type of language, but it's just because I'm so anal about speilling/grammar, but YOU ALL KNOW THAT!

See, holmes, or homie I can understand...from your home town, or home turf...makes sense.

My boys are always making fun of me because Im so white, so I got mad and told them I could write a rap song. So I did.

ill admit, there are quite a few of the deeper phrases and metaphors that can be confusing to those not on the inside, or having a genuine interest.

keep on learning and you'll be accustomed to it and clowning your friends in no time. tell em to stop sweatin you. if they get beligerent with you tell em they better check themselves before they get dealt with. let em know they cant fade you because you, and youre a shorty tryin to come up and thats on the rizeal fo shizel.

I mean, I know the jist of most of it..it's just when they get into real slang (know how long it took me to figure out what 411 meant? I use that one now because I think its funny)....I just can't use the language without sounding like a nerdy white person...I just can't get the hang of the rhythm of speech. I wind up sounding like a bad version of Jack Kerouac. LOL...

i know what type of town you grew up in, i finished high school in one of those after beginning high school in chicago. talk about culture shock....for them!! lol.

sometimes you may hear a word, but it wont fit into the type of speech you are using and thus sounds silly. case in point
