What are the various special forces and what branch do they serve? I know rangers are Army and seals are Navy. Also can marines ever become seals? Me and a buddy were discussing this the other day and he seems to think Green Berets are marines but I always thought they were part of the Army too.

rangers---------army (not special forces) recon-----------marines (bad mofo's) green berets----army (badder mofo's) para rescue-----air force (almost baddest) seals-----------navy (baddest mofo's) para rescue has very hard and long training. you train for 12 to 18 months straight. army rangers are NOT special forces and dont let anyone tell you they are. one of my best friends was a ranger. it is just below specfor. ------------------

There are two different marine special forces....their's recon (jumpwings), and force recon(jumpwings and scuba bubbles). We won't get into an argument as to who's the best, every Special Forces unit is good at what they do.

Officially there's no such thing as Delta, but they definitely exist and I believe they're based out of Ft. Bragg. (They're an army unit). I've had friends tell me that you can go to bars near Bragg and see jacked-up, badass mofos who will tell you they're computer technicians or television repairmen or whatever...but they're actually D-boys; they just can't admit to it.

Finally a topic I can comment on. Special Forces Army are the baddest of the baddest. Why do I say this, because my father is a triple tabber (Special Forces, Airborne, Ranger) and still is. He has done it all, and has workes with them all. And yes Delta force is there. My father is a very respectable man. He has been through Force Recon training(marines) F.R.O.G. training(army dive team) and the list goes on. When I ask him who is the best of the best, he nevers answers. As stated above, every branch is unique in its own way, and cant do things the others cant. DE OPPRESSO LIBER

Delta Force is very real. They live in a compound at Ft Bragg. Their mission is mainly countrterrorism, and they are the military's best close quarters combat team. (They were used in Somalia and Panama to invade buildings. Very dangerous stuff.) Delta Force missions often necessitate civilian type appearances. It's not a "lone wolves" unit. Most of the guys are married (more stable) and there is an intense psychological evaluation to weed out any who are incompatible. Delta Force tryouts, while physically demanding, are designed mainly to assess the mental capability of the candidate...not only intelligence, but how he will react to various stresses, particularly when physically tired. Also, the squadron commanders (Lt Col's) can refuse to accept a candidate for any reason. They look for guys who will fit the team that is already in place. I was a Ranger for a while and I know a few guys who went that route. There are women in Delta Force, in certain intelligence gathering capacities. -------------------------------------------- As Buck said, every special operations unit has its own capabilities and missions - Army Special Forces is mainly designed as a high level intelligence gathering tool, or to teach military tactics to foreign forces. The "snake-eater" legend has become mainly that...it was a different mission in teh VietNam era. I've trained with most SOF units.....their tealent is mission specific and they are nit really comparable.....just as an example - Coast Guard rescue swimmers go through more "water torture" than anyone else.....and that's the Coast Guard.

What Matt said... I've also trained with SF...they are not HOOWAAH tough guys, and don't want to be...they are not bad-ass kill-em-all types...most are very smart, very well trained, and all are mutli-task trained with a specialty, eg - combat medic, demolitions, etc...usually each member of a team (a small unit of 5-10 soldiers) will have one specialty to contribute to the team's over-all functioning...their raison d'etre is in-country training of subversives and intel gathering, not engaging the enemy...they also do a lot of PSYOPS...you will not find SF teams making the front page with their exploits, as most operations are in the "gray" area

Ferrus, Gotcha. I'm from NY city by way of Atlanta, but I lived in Crowley (small town between Lafayette and Lake Charles) for a while. Funny where life takes you isn't it?

Crowley - birthplace of the most corrupt governor in US history, EWE... good eatin' 'round dere 'do, yah cher? ex-wife's family is from Crowley/Sulphur area, so I used to know it pretty well...no offense, but aside from the chow, it's a pit I'm Texas born (oh shit, let's not get them started), but grew up overseas in Europe and Far East...went to Law School in BR, moved to New Orleans, decided I liked BR better (partying 8 days a week gets old)...

Ferrus, No offense taken brother. Actually I was living with a then girlfriend when I was in Crowley...though I was going to marry her. (It has to be love if you're living in fuckin Crowley, right? Especially since I am from New York City) You're right on about the food - but other than that, Crowley is one of the most depressing places I have ever seen. |
