Management information systems.
Is this a good degree to have? Any info regarding this and it's mother is greatly appreciated!
Also, MIS Master's degree worth it or MBA?

IT fields = staff postion = expendable

Forget MIS, go MBA.
The MBA is truly the switchblade of degree's.

I am specilizing in Finace for my MBA, lady is in Accounting. I advise staying away from information technolgy type degree's. Unless thats what you do best.

I'm a MIS major right now, and looking forward to changing it to something else...At my school it's the same as the intro courses to computer science but throw in a bit more accounting and mgt courses

I have a degree in Philosophy and it didn't hurt me at all in "moving up the ladder".

do what you are most interested in. no degree can guarantee you anything so do what you enjoy and you will have a much better chance of success. Any of the options you mentioned (with hard work) should lead to a successful career. Good luck.

I've got an MBA and an MIS. IF you go MBA then you are looking at the financial end of the business, accounting, finance, planning. If you go MIS you are looking at IT which is now splintered into two career paths, Tech - people who can write code, admin - people who design projects and look at computers and go "oh pretty toy!".

IF you are looking to become a big dog, VP type you have a better shot on the MBA side of businesses since the volume of VP positions come from that side. However, it is a political bullshit fest for sure. I'm a DB manger in Financial Planning, and I've turned down a promotions due to the bullshit fest. I like where I am and what I do so you have to find your niche no matter which degree you go for.

Also, if your going to start your own business and undergrad is really all you need with an emphasis in finance and accounting.

Many thanks to you guys.
I was advised that MIS was the best way to go but you guys have made me think twice about that, especially Wodin.
I am torn between what I like to do and what I have to do.
I originally intended to go to school for nutrition/dietetics but I am leaning towards a business degree now.
Thanks. I guess I will research a little more, especially income potential.

I completed my MBA in 1993 (damn! I'm old) ... (My B.A. is in History and I also have a teaching credential).

In any event, keep in mind that once you graduate with a business degree, you still DO NOT know how to do anything. Think about it. You go for a job interview and the hiring manager says "what do you know how to do?" You're going to just sit there with a stupid grin on your face.

The lesson? While you're studying business, learn a skill. For me, I studied accounting. My MBA/C.P.A. license got me a job (however, I was fired 5 weeks ago and I'm currently out of work).

A business degree is kind of like a communications degree, that is, it sounds good but is basically worthless unless you have a skill.

As some on this board may know, due to my untimely dismissal from my employment in San Francisco, I moved to Las Vegas. I made a base salary of $120,000 in SF. I'll be lucky to get a job at $35,000 in LV!!!

The Lesson: take your jobs/careers more seriously than I did. I have truly fucked up my life/career and will be paying the price for the rest of my life.
