I'm 24. Been working for the past six years, make pretty good cash, but often times I feel like saying fuck it all. I work to pay for a car, an apartment, all these things that basicly own me. Has anyone ever just said, fuck it? Meaning, left their job, their town, their livelihood, started out fresh? I want to. I want to move to a place with an ocean. Work on the ocean teaching people how to surf, although I don't know how, or teaching people how to sail, although I don't know how. My point is, there is so much beauty in the world, why do I just continue to let it pass me by and sit in my cube day after day staring at my computer, doing bullshit work that has no interest to me whatsoever, just so I can pay my bills. It makes me want to drive my car off a cliff. Well, I've never understood suicide, if life sucks, change it. Leave a good paying job for a job you love but make shit? Have any of you ever done this, or felt like this?

Yep.

I went back to school and learned computer networking and got into a whole different ballgame.

If it sucks, leave.

I grew up on a yacht. Living on the water is NICE! I sailed every day. When I finished highschool, I worked on boats, and surfed or sailed every day. I have covered thousands of miles across the water. What I finally discoverd was that there was no retirement, no 401K, no paid sick days, or holidays. I too went to school, and now do networks. This to me was a wise move. And I still sail, just not every damn day! There is something nice about having a real job, with regular pay...A sailing instructor here in San Diego makes under $10/hr. And it's a part time gig, mostly on the weekends. A surfing instructor? I've never heard of such a thing!

Yes and no...I get like that I usually think of the pros of my job...and weigh the options of other jobs.

I'm also back in school for my MBA (Matty hates me for that )....but somedays I hate that too. The grass is always greener...best thing to do is see on majority of the time what you like and want and can do. Nobody is happy with what they do all the time...nobody!

I have voiced to a few people my desire to leave and go to soemplace tropical or mexico or an island and just live carefree. I am conflicted b/c I love material stuff and know that they wouldnt go together well.

I've lived in 5 different cities, and each move allowed me to free myself, and reinvent myselfself. Free myself from old habits and negative friends and become more a person I want to be.
But you have to be realistic about it.
Moving from Arizona to a place with an ocean makes sense, given what you've said.
Chucking it all and trying to make a living off something you know nothing about doesn't make a lot of sense, though it might be emotionally fun for a while.

How about moving to a costal city and continue doing what you know how to do?
Once there, learn sailing and the other stuff you think would make you happy.

I hear you, I about told my boss to pound sand today, I got yelled at for too many outbound calls. I swear to fucking god I get fucking yelled at every day here. Plus I am on test and EQ right now so my patience for some weak dick motherfucker to scream at me is nil. I am going back to excavating. God forbid this multi-billion dollar corp has to soak up a whole $14 fucking dollars for the hour I spent making calls.

My girl the exact thing. She had a good pay job at an insurance company and she left it to become an event/party planner. She'd like to eventually be planning parties for the stars. She's making less money but says she hated to her other job. She says she wouldn't go back.

Have you ever watched American Beauty? That's one of my favorite movies of all time. Lester is my fucking hero. That's what the movie is all about, a guy saying fuck it to everything that's holding him in a life he doesn't want.

I know what you mean, I work in computers, have done for 6 years, at first I wanted to conquer it, Ive got 3 quarters way there but now often I think whats the fucking point to all this shit.

I hate working for people, material gods trying to control you, when they are older always lazier and stupider. I always think what gives them the right to order me about when I am younger stronger and faster?!?!

Staring at a computer screen so you can buy yourself a fast car, a house get a woman have kids and then die.

Great fun. But then you could say whats the point to anything?

Personally I want to go back in time to Medieval England, be a big fuckoff evil black knight and kick some ass for a living.

Now thats my kind of self employment.

After working at a bank for 5 years (at 26)I said Fuck It and quit-moved to ST. Thomas to live with a couple friends. Had a bartending job within two hours of landing and played "beach and beer" for a year. Got kinda tired of nothing being real urgent or important and moved back here -but I had to do it or I'd never have realized that some of the things I bitched about here weren't all that bad or important. My friends are still bartending in St. Thomas- different strokes..

NVR2BIG - You left me clueless. Come on man, throw a guy on a bone.

And yes, American Beauty hits it right on. That is how I have felt for a few years now.
I just don't have the balls to go for it. It'd be easier if I didn't have a daughter. She's four, so it makes it harder to just up and go. I don't want to leave her behind, but at the same time I only see her about 8 days a month as it is. I just feel like I need a break. Yes, everyone needs one, but I mean, I NEED ONE! Feel like I'm gonna have a nervous breakdown or some shit sometimes. A month long cruise would fix me up for a few more years of this working bullshit. That'd be nice. On one of those single's liners. Hooppphhh. Bush everywhere man. Liquor. Sun. Water. Wind. FREEDOM. Hooopphhhhh. How do you get a month off work without being fired? Oh, and it'd be a nice perk if I could get paid too.
Thanks!

I was a department manager in a printing company for 5 years, working long hours etc. It was good money, plus I had all the perks that come with the job, company car, expense account and whatnot, but I never really liked it that much, I was stressed out alot of the time and because of the hours I was working I wasn't hunting as much as I wanted to.
So last year I decided to change, I sold my house, bought some land out in the country, subdivided it and sold off a couple small blocks which pretty well paid for my 18 acres.
I resigned from my position and went back to being a printer, but only working 3 days a week.
So now on my 4 days off a week, I hunt, lift weights and spend alot more time with my gf and mates then I used to.
I don't miss my old job one bit !!!
