I bought a bass guitar and an amp about 2 or 3 years ago and it's sitting in my basement collecting dust now. It takes lots of time and practice. I was thinking that shit couldn't be that hard but I was wrong. I just didn't have the time or patience to commit to it. I'd start out with something cheap and start learining, later on if you decide you like it, then i'd think about getting a good axe.

what i would suggest is hittin' a pawn shop and picking up something for under $100. You never know you might not like it, if you got cash to blow an Ovation or a Martin are good makes. Starting out on an acoustic is a good move learn all the basics on that then hit the electric, you will be that much better. As far as hard hard it is, that depends on you, you could be a natural, or it could come pretty tough. I have never taken a lesson in my life and have been playing for about 13 years self-taught, it will be very frustrating at first but stick with it and read lots of mags and practice practice practice....If you have a "Guitar Center" nearby go there first and see what they got you can maybe find a new one for around $100. Good luck

try this, buy acoustic but put electric strings on it to start with, it will be alot less painful, and remember buy a lite guage string.

Well I have been trying the last year and half. Can say that it going fast but I'm getting it.
Get a small amp for around 100 - and get a mexician strat for around 270 and you'll be happy.
I know more about building them and equipment than I do playing right now.

Also Tab is easy to read and is all over the net. Jsut about every song you can think of is out for free.

Never buy a cheap piece of shit...it just makes life more difficult. The nicer the guitar, the easier to play. It's like a car: what would you rather learn on, a brand new Sunfire, or a 1978 Pinto that has sticky gears?

Pieces of shit don't stay in tune, their fretboards are crap, and the tuning pegs strip very easily.

I have a Fender nylon stringed classical (an absolute dream) and a Seagull 6 string acoustic. Had a Seagull 12 string as well, but it got stolen. Fender acoustics are nice too. Can't go wrong with an Ovation, but chances are slim you can get one at a deal.

I'm not sure if you can get Seagulls in America (hand made in Montreal) but if you can, they are reasonably priced (about $400 Canadian) and sound wicked.

You can get extra light guage strings, but the lighter the string, the easier it will go out of tune. I like gold wound, but they're expensive. Otherwise, brass wound have a nice rich sound.

of course Kat is right, you get what you pay for i was merely suggesting that you dont blow a shitload of cash, cuz obviously they can get up there in price, but if you feel you have the determination to learn then go and buy a nice one, Ovation has a sister brand called Applause, made by Ovation but not the same woods, but same craftsmanship, check musiciansfriend.com for prices, you will be satified with this one, and if you stick with it you will still have a nice instrument, I am thinking about getting one myself.

I've never tried an Applause...gotta check that out. Thanks Godzilla

I forgot to answer the second part of your question, whichis the easy part.
How good you'll get is no different than bodybuilding. How much you put into it is what you'll get out of it. If you pluck at it here and there you won't get anywhere very fast. If you make an effort, and practise all the time (and I mean ALL the time) you'll be good in no time.
Music is like lifting: you'll reach plateaus, other times you'll go great guns. Sometimes its frustrating, but once its really in your blood you'll never leave it for long.

Yeah, I know the one..that is a BADASS guitar. I'm thinking of buying a bass to add to my stringed collection and I think Im gonna go with a Washburn cause they have such nice thin necks for my wee hands. Fender bass's are like playing 2x4's.

I also want to get a Telecaster, and a Gibson Black Beauty Les Paul. I've got 2 Epiphones right now..one 1967 Coronet that is pre-Gibson and a new Explorer. I'm not that happy with the Explorer, but it was a present. I had a BC Rich Mockingbird that I sold a while back. Just bought a PA system though so Im broke.

I've been playing for about 6 yrs. now...it's not as hard to learn as you may think. Just pick up any "beginning guitar" book that shows tablature...you don't even need to know how to read notes. Once you get good at playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and "Happy Birthday" and all that bullshit, start buying guitar tablature books of your favorite bands' albums.

slack.... i have played along time and played in bands. At one time i thought it would be my life. Music is like anything else, the more you put into it the more you will get out of it. It's not hard to attain basic proficiency on an instrument, but if you want to be really good you have to put in SERIOUS time and dedication. Just like anything in life. Since you are just beginning don't spend too much now, wait until you see if you really like it and will stick with it. Buy yourself a decent low priced acoustic (maybe $200-300) and go from there. BTW, learning tab is ok, but learn to read music it will make everything easier in the long run.

I played bass in a high school garage band, hardest songs I could paly were ozzys goodbye to romance and a bon jovi living on a prayer. we were ok, none of us knew how to read quitar music, we all played by ear and 90% of our equipment was borowed. lol

I have two strats

An American Standard - got for about $695, major sale.

Then a mexican Strat - I started with, that was $275. I haven't had a one bit of trouble.

I just picked up a squire Telecaster - I know your like its cheap, but it had great wood on the fret board and a adler body. So I just order a set of EMG pick ups and wiring harness.

Amps -
I just bought a crate gfx-212
before that I got a dx-212
and to start I had a little gx-15.

I have pick this all up in the last years.
All I can say is that it has hurt my my gun collecting and given me a little fun.

I have 5 electric guitars. 3 of them are total crap and I tore them up to use as parts to fix problems on future guitars. and to learn how they work.
the two nice ones are great - one for dropped D stuff like Tool and the like, and the other for lead. I also have some decent amps and a RP12. My apartment would kick me out if I started using the amps, so I mainly play with headphones and the cabinet simulator in the RP12.

the good sides of learning on accoustic first is 1) they are cheap to get used - and do get used, don't bother with a new one. 2) once you learn to play well on accoustic, the electric feels so easy to play (you will have strong fingers/forearms from the accoustic).
the bad sides are 1)accoustic guitars suck, 2) you tend to learn pansy ass songs, 3) they are hard enough to play that a lot of people give them up, 4) you can't really bend on them unless you get a nicer one that similuates the feel of an electric.

so basically it depends on what sort of music you want to play and how much you really want to play.

ITs a good thing your starting on acoustic as it will build finger stength. I would recommend you tune every string down a full step to start with so it easier on you fingers and wrist and you can later tune "up" to standard
tuning.
Yamahas are good and cheap for a starter, but you will eventualy feel frustrated and want to move up.
Brass strings sound great on all acoustics but they die fast forcing you to change em often. But I think its worth it.
Grotto.

I've got an ovation celebrity, not too expensive of an accoustic guitar. Then i have my casino, which is sweet. Just sold my les paul, so only 2 guitars at the moment. Still waitin to get money to get me a rickenbacker. I recommend an ovation or a fender accoustic to start with, both can be pretty affordable and are good guitars.
