I dont consider a stadium full of 9 year old girl, influence, more like infatuation, once they grow up and learn what musical talent is they will drop that shit...and believe it or not, this surprised me as well, but the boy bands did not dominate the music industry in terms of sales and concerts, and over all gross earnings, it was the old school artist ie.Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen etc. | ||

If you are refering to Pantera, the reason that they wont is because they dont get the airplay they need, but I tell you what they have one hell of a loyal fan base, out of there past 2 albums one debuted at #1 and the last one at #4, that is impressive to me for a bad that has virtually zero airplay/videoplay.... | ||

Pantera gets no airplay unless it's on WSSU(college radio) here in Jersey. Bro Pantera rocks. They've done well inspite of no airplay.Sold out concerts, millions of records being sold because of their loyal fanbase. They do not suck. | ||

I don't really give a rats ass about the politics, bullshit, and personalities that surround these bands, but if I had to pick my all time favorite metal band it would be Metallica hands down. While I do prefer their older stuff I think their newer stuff kicks too. If you sit down and really absorb S&M, it's truely insperational. An incredibly talented band...it's a shame that things have come to this for them. ------------------ | ||

I too, am a guitar player. Kirk Hammett is NOT a great guitar player. The endings to most of his solos are the same. You know the 6 or so pull offs and the 2 high bends? ALA- One solo? (the last solo) Lars is NOT a great drummer, average at best. James is NOT a singer. He was a good shouter in the old days at best. They made great songs then, and had some attitude. They stood for the "underground" scene and said fuc* you to the limelight. They made it thru word of mouth, tape trading (but now are against Napster, figure that one out)and a kick ass live show. No airplay, besides college stations. Just like Pantera has done now. They sold out and to whoever says they didn't, you are VERY wrong. ------------------ | ||

Some examples: Any S.R.Vaughn, he had passion and skill. Any Randy Rhoads solo. Skill, passion and ahead of his time. Michael Angelo (Nitro)- The fastest most technical guitar player I have ever heard. His arpeggios are amazing. He lacks passion, but is incredible. Keb' Mo' (Kevin Moore) is a very, very good blues player. He is the Robert Johnson of our time. These are some of my favorites, but to each his own. ------------------ | ||

Having grown up listening to SRV I can say he is by far the best I've ever heard. Little WIng still gives me a tear in my eyes cause it reminds me hes dead and it was such a waste. I'm surrounded by people who play the guitar (dad, nieghbor who is simply amazing, can play anything by ear, etc.) I think I know the differance between good and great | ||

Shelby, Gotta agree with JackTripper. Put the lyrics aside. Ignore the vocalist, if you must. Listen to the drum work on some of these death metal bands. Sheer speed and pounding bass drums. Brutal! There are some DM bands out there who have lyrics that are bizzare. Trying to top the previous bands in "shock" value keeps going to new levels. These bands now are in the same tradition that our old buddies Metallica were when they weren't mainstream. Just my .02. ------------------ | ||

anyone who visits a music forum with some sort of regularity will be sick and fucking tired of metallica posts... first selling out. i'll repeat what i've been saying for years: i think if they changed their name after the Black Album, everyone would have been happy. they could have sung their happy psuedo-emotional ballads and some people would have bought the records purely on their merits and the name Metallica would be still identified with greatness rather than with the descent into pop culture. | ||
