I played college football, but played in my first rugby match this weekend. We lost to Air Force, but it was a fucking BLAST! As an ex-lineman, I can tell I'm gonna love this game. I had no idea what the fuck I was doing out there. I just kinda did what my teammates told me. They had me playing in the second row, on the right. I don't even know what position it is. One thing I notice about the sport is that everyone plays a lot "softer" compared to football. No one really sells out to make a monster hit. They just kinda hold onto people and wait for help. None of that shit for me. I was playing like I was wearing a face-mask and shoulder pads. And I have a massive black eye to show for it. I woke up this morning and it was swollen shut!!! I LOVE THIS SPORT!

Are you a Rugby guy or an Aussie Rules Football guy. I don't even know the difference.

Rugby these days isn't as physically hard as it used to be. With a lot of rule changes to make the game more of a free flowing spectacle it requires the players to be a lot more versatile. In the past the emphasis was on mauls and rucks with the heavier pack often having the advantage. Rugby League in my opinion is a lot more physical and similar to the American game. Its all about hitting the ball up for 5 tackles and gaining yardage. These players don't wear helmets or padding. So in that sense its probably more physical than the American game. Aussie rules I don't know much about but from all accounts it seems like a tougher game than league.

aussie rules is less about contact and more about speed, height and co-ordination. all points are scored off the feet - there is no try/touchdown. possession is continually turned over, tackles aren't particularly common (no-one bust my ass here, i'm just summarising very quickly). it's not a pansy-ass game by any means, but an entirely different ball-game (groan). Rugby as you describe it is probably rugby union. it can get really nasty, especially when you're at the bottom of a maul and people are rucking the shit out of you, no pads, no helmets. the reason everyone isn't as crazy as you are (ya yankee loon ) is there aren't 40+ (is that right?) people on the team to make replacements here and there. if your star second-rower starts bleeding and gets binned, then you've got a bloody great gap to fill. the game is also more aerobically demanding than the stop/start of NFL and buggering off the field all the time, so there's less opportunity to make gigantic hit. either that, or you're just nuttier than everyone else and have a death wish

Barbarian-- those are some good points about why the game tends to be less collision-oriented. In football, you can really go all out to make a huge play, knowing you'll get a 30 second rest at least, and if its 4th down you get to go sit on the bench. No, I don't have a death wish! Its just i'm playing rugby with a developed football instinct. It'll take some time to develop the rugby instinct, I would imagine. ------------------

Hey Austin what college team do ya play for? I played for Northeastern U. (I also played football as well-D-lineman though) I can say one thing for rugby that I cant say for any other sport I have played is that rugby taxes and expends every single last bit of usable energy, leaving you feeling so exhausted you think you might just pass out and die - UNTIL THE DRINK-UP OCCURS MU-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

i am an aussie rules boy, personally ive never played rugby seriously but i like a fast game and thats where A.Rules beats Rugby, as for GridIron that game is as slow as hell, i dont mean to flame your national game guys but dont you get tired of all that stopping and starting?

that's the point, barney. with all the stopping, you DONT get tired! American Football isn't as flowing and continuous, true. But just think of it as saving up its energy during down times to allow for more violent explosions during on times.

Good post stone, I have been playing 5 years at the club side level, I wear # 8 so lots of responsibility, but Rugby is alot more free flowing then football, the only rest you really get is your line out or right before the scrum, or if you are being lazy and leaning into rucks, hee hee. Funnest shit I have ever played and lose the football mantality before you lose your head!! You can still make big hits just be smart about it and form tackle. Cheers...
