The military (army and airfore especially) are often at the forefront of certain areas of experimentation. The military is not controlled by the same ethics committees and guidelines to which universities are subjected. Many speculate we are far more technologically advanced in many areas than what is widely known. In keeping with recent news about gene manipulation and smart drugs, what would keep the Army from developing a super-intelligent animal? It could be done. I have no idea how long it would take or the mechanism behind it exactly, but it is very possible. Imagine if these scientists were able to do this to produce a super-intelligent dog. This dog, while still able to only bark and wag its tail, could read, understand human language, and communicate through a special keyboard made for dog paws. Now unleash this dog in an enemy country. It would be free to roam undetected and could spy on the enemy. Would Saddam ever suspect an extremely affectionate dog that showed up one day on his palace doorstep? A dog could get to people that would ordinarily be untouchable. There is no way a military force could get close enough to Saddam to take him out without taking out half of a city. But a dog could get very close and when Saddam sleeps, the dog goes for the throat. The dog also could be released into enemy lines, scout around unnoticed, and then return to base to make reports on bunkers and hidden missle sites. There are many more applications that I'm sure I'm missing. But everyone should be able to see the principle here. Just something to ponder if you ever find a stray animal that acts like a dog, but then again....    |
