you talk about your band a lot, I'm just curious about what kind of music you play, who are your major influences, what is your instrument set up. all of that groovy shit you know.

Hey Rick...howd the bass lesson go?

Hmm....well, here goes
Music type: heavy, crunchy but with funky slappy bass; vocals that go from soft to hardcore.

Influences: for me personally Iron Maiden was the biggest reason I got into music, but Soundgarden, Faith No More and Metallica were also big influeneces. Now I love the honesty of Everlast, the integrity of Tool, and the sheer power of Skunk Ananasie..I listen to everything though.. my bass player is a Flea/Steve harris/Les Claypool/Cliff Burton freak.
My guitar player loves all that rap/metal stuff plus Skinlab, Slipknot..all that new stuff. Oh yeah..also Garbage, which is why he wanted to work with me.
The drummer is a freak...he likes the Police and Janes Addiction and basically everything I hate.

Instruments: bass player is a lefty so he's limited. Hes saving for a lefty, 6 stringed Warwick. Peavey bass amp (which he hates)with I think a 15" speaker. Yorkville (made right in Canada) is our preferred bass amp. He uses an "ice box" for effects

Guitar player: Epiphone SG (which he hates), Peavey amp, cant remember the model.
Various effects inculding: Vox Wah, distortion, flange, chorus, and i cant remember the other.

Drums: Pearl Export series, Zildjian cymbals (he destrous Sabian and cant affort PAiste)

Me: Shure SM58 microphone, Yorkville 6 channel mixer with a built in amplifier, elite moniters 150w a side. Also 4 guitars of my own, and a Yamaha keyboard.

I dont know if you guys can get Yorkville down there, but it is wicked good stuff, plus a guaranteed warranty, which is great when you're lugging the crap around and happen to drop it LOL....

What about you Rick? got a band? gimme the scoop!

No band, Me a a few friends Jam at a garage, I have the best time just smoking a couple of joints and Jaming, I'm new to playing the Bass so We are starting off with pretty simple stuff, Like Nirvana and such, I use to have a Fender Guitar but I was a sucky ass guitar player, the guy who use to play the Bass transfered to a school out of state and he gave me the Bass which he used to learn a Yamaha. as soon as I can get rid of the Guitar I'm gonna invest in a nice American made Bass, Like I said I like simplicity, I don't go too much for a lot of the funk Slaping and shit, a nice catchy bass line can be had just using 4 or 5 of notes, My teacher is a big Jazz bassist, he plays the 6 string bass like you woulndn't fucking belive, but he still has respect for the 4 string players like myself and although he is more into the Funk Jazz style he still apreciates the simplicity of Rock, he says that anybody can move the crowd playing a slap solo, but it takes a great musical genious to arange a 4 - 5 note tune that can capture peoples hearts kind of like sting or even that catchy ass "anotherone bites the dust" sort of bass lines, Thats realy the style of play I'm leaning towards.

Off the top real quick:
I admit it
I didnt do it
My glock did it
I should of got a bid
But my case was acquitted

you are very correct Rick...there are two types of bass players: ones who are basically guitar players with four strings or a true back beat groove, and the bass players who "know their place" (as some would say) arent given enough credit.
I love the bass..gonna get one soon. Cant play a solo to save my life; always been a rhythm player and bass just fits that really well.
Not only are bass players rare, GOOD ones are even more rare. Keep it up! Nirvana, eh? See, now I dont know you at all, but I would have never pegged you as a Nirvana fan. Classic stuff, great for jamming on.

Pepe our bassist has a Fender Jazz and a Ibanez something or other. I want to get a Washburn cause they have really tiny necks, which is great for my tiny fingers LOL...

I have a black Dean Edge 5 and a black Peavey Fury 4 string. I don't play in a "band" or anything, but I do have a steady Sunday "gig" that's been goin' on for about 9 years now (if you get my meaning).

Kat, if you are interested in a bass with a smaller neck (comparing mine to other 5 strings out there), really good electronics (EMG), and don't want to morgage (sp?) your dog or anything, check out the Dean! I'll try to put their address in here. www.deanguitars.com hopefully that worked!

Oh BTW, My biggest influence as far as style and MAJOR talent is Victor Wooten. That would also mean that I like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
