I remember hearing on the news a while ago about how some person made a fake $100 bill with Dubya's face on it and tried to use it to pay for something. He succeeded and got like $90+ in change.

This doesn't seem illegal to me. The only applicable charge that I can see would be counterfeiting money, but isn't counterfeiting when you try to make a fake of REAL money? As far as I know, there are no $100 Dubya bills. Being charged with counterfeiting for that would be the equilvalent of me being charged with counterfeiting for trying to pay for something with my old report card or something.

Anyone know? I've got my scanner, some money, and a few pictures of Dubya handy... =)

Since the penalties and laws haven't accomodated us folks with scanners and color printers, I wouldn't press my luck.

Personally I think any store clerk stupid enough to accept Dubya money deserves what they get. Hey, that money would be good for rolling into little straws to snort with!

I saw a local news story recently where a convenience store clerk accepted a "custom-made" $200 dollar bill and returned change! No joke, a friggin' $200 dollar bill.

Yes, it is illegal. If you claim something is cash and it is not then it is "attempted fraud".

Yeah, tell that to the IRS or the major banks who occasionally screw up and give people money by mistake. They demand it back and will prosecute you if you don't return it, acting like it was your fault!

The best time to use fake money would be at a club---nothing bigger then a 20---always when the club is packed--always by 2 drinks and hand them a 20-----Take a dollar bill and cut off the 2 top corners and put the 2 top corners of a 20----make scans of the twenty dollar corners and put them on as many dollar bills as you like-----I have done this a few times---Best place to do this is a raves (buying water) so many fucked up people and little risk--always real dark----I suggest only doing it twice at one place then go to the next---You could easly make a weeks pay in a few hours and drink for free

Yep, it's illegal as hell. Some kids got busted for doing it in my area. I don't think it was George W. I think they used Shaquille Oneal's picture on it. It was accepted at a fast food restaurant. The kids did it as a joke and were shocked that the person actually accepted it.

This is the dumbest question I have ever seen asked. It is fraud, counterfeiting money, and probably many other crimes.
The Secret Service handles counterfeit and they would have fun with you.

If you even scan a dollar in you can get charged with counterfeiting now. My older brothers had friends that got in a shitload of trouble when they got raided for drugs and when computers were examined they were charged with counterfeiting by having the bills scanned in.

My intelligence far surpasses yours, so I would appreciate not seeing comments such as these in the future.

Counterfeit - To make fraudulent copies of something valuable.

A $100 bill with George W. Bush's face on it has no value; therefore, making copies of a $100 dollar bill with George W. Bush's face on it and attempting to use it to purchase goods would not constitute counterfeiting based on the dictionary definition of the word, hence, the reason for my question.

True, because a one dollar bill is something of value; therefore, scanning a one dollar bill would constitute counterfeiting. A dollar bill with Dubya's face on it has no value, so, based on the dictionary definition, making copies of it should not be deemed counterfeiting.

Please be so kind as to think before you speak in disparaging ways to other people. Perhaps my question was not "dumb," but you, in fact, were the "dumb" one who could not see why it was not a "dumb" question.

To everyone else who did respond in a helpful way without being a dick, even my arch-nemesis 2Thick (j/k hehehe), thanks.

Oh, and Steelheart, Dubya = President George W. Bush aka President George "Dubya" Bush. =)

Warik, I'm surprised at you! You're bright enough to know that a general dictionary definition of a word and the legal definition of a word are not always the same!

Here is what I found in the legal dictionary at lawyers.com (although I'm sure that someone more versed in federal jurisprudence could elaborate further)

counterfeit:

Definition
[Middle French contrefait, past participle of contrefaire to imitate, draw, paint, from contre- counter- + faire to make]
made in imitation of a genuine article (as a document) without authorization and esp. with intent to deceive or defraud
Pronounciation: 'kau'n-t&r-"fit

I would think that the clause "with intent to deceive or defraud" would apply in the case of the man who used the fake bill to make purchases.

I know that they're not always the same. That's why I asked the question. The dictionary definition of "murder" and the legal definition of "murder" are the same (for the most part), so I was attempting to see if the dictionary and legal definitions of "counterfeit" were the same. Not like I plan on making a few $100 Bush bills in the near future and trying to buy stuff - I can afford my own stuff. This was a "for educational purposes" question.

I'll have to keep that law dictionary you used bookmarked for future reference. Thanks.

I heard that in the Dairy Queen case, it was a fake $200 bill, and the clerk gave change! But I also heard that in that case, the bill was so crude and obviouisly fake, they were not going to charge the guy with anything!
