Certainly not an expert, but aren't bulking bros supposed to go easy on the cardio? You get that extra energy rush while on and the tenancy is

that's a vo2 max testing system - obviously for cyclists. the treadmill ones are pretty cool - or at least the one I got tested on up at lake placid. it was wide enough and long enough for anyone's stride b/c they also tested nordic skiers on it (they wore roller blade sort of things - longer base). I had a pretty good vo2 max at the time, which would explain why I could do well even though my form wasn't perfect. once you get to the olympic level though, you are really better off to get tested on one of those as early as possible to make sure your time is worth it - drugs only help you the slightest bit and since everyone is doing them you need to - but for the most part it is smart training and whatever your genetic top end for vo2 max is, as well as form and such. as for how long I can hit my heart, I know at the end of high school I passed what my heart rate monitor could go at, and the vo2 max system had me at over 220 - but I don't recall how long I lasted at that pace - I know I could run at least 2 miles at that pace... so at least 9mins or so... although it shouldn't be that high for the whole 2 miles in a race... hmm. but yeah, I used to train for an hour or two with it at 170 or so no problem at all. I could run 8 miles at a 5:30 pace and only break a sweat due to the heat - no stress. ------------------ Build a man a fire, he is warm for a day. I'm not sure what mine was but in highschool we wore those heart beat monitors during training to judge our paces....mine would be 165-170 during 5 min repeat miles. and around 160 for long runs

I do interval training where my HR can exceed 190, although for less than a minute at a time. The interval thing is the BEST cardio-type training I have ever tried.

I used to burn 220 on wind sprints all the time. They use your resting heart rate as a marker to. I can get that crazy low. Been in the middle 50's several times.

Ah! 190 .. I would be nervous going up that high! And yes I've stopped the cardio currently. I don't miss it!

I am a bit shocked now thinking back how low my heart rate would be when I was a runner...I loved finishing 5 min mile repeats feeling good and refreshed when alot of my teammates were bending over huffing and puffing my first sub 4:40 mile in training my heart stayed around 175-180. It really depended on how windy things were and how it would affect my stride

JohnyO - I hear ya - I hate running now (I suppose cycling in your case) - I did it for over 9 years and now I am sick of it. but I have to get back into it somewhat b/c I'm getting too fat. I can remember when I'd run or bike 3 miles to the Y (we didn't have a car - I grew up really poor) and then workout, and then run or bike home. needless to say, I was in pretty good shape. The Shadow - yeah, intervals are the best for fat burning - well, you don't burn any during the workout (or very little) - but they burn a lot for the days afterwards. and they are good b/c they are over faster than lsd (long slow distance) which will burn the fat only while you are doing it. so would you rather an hour of fat burning, or two days of it. when I start up again, I'm definitely doing intervals... and these things called "Cruz's" named after the Olympian that invented them. you sprint a football field and then do X pushups, then immediately sprint to the other end and do X situps, then immediately sprint to the other end... you catch my drift - you do 10 back and forth with different exercises - then jog around to rest for 5-10 mins after that and then do another - if you can take it, do 5 sets. that is one awesome workout - it was the hardest ones we'd do in college if you did it right, and I loved them. Cleaner - that is a great sign of aerobic strength - high end is very high, low end is nice and low. when I was wearing a heart rate monitor, with the feedback I could get mine down pretty low, but not that much under 50 - that is good. most of the relatively decent (polar) heart rate monitors top out at 220 - so you might have been over that. TxCollegeguy - it sounds like we are similar builds or at least at one time were. ------------------ Build a man a fire, he is warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he is warm for a lifetime.

yeah I wore my monitor at night sometimes and set it to beep if it got under 45. The lowest I can remember it being was 43

As a contest , I used to hold my breath for four minuets, that could explain why I'm now a mental case. |
