I haven't researched the numbers at all but I'm assuming Bush has a very slim chance of being able to pull off everything he promised and not economically ruining the country for years to come.

Of course we know everything won't come to surface, but I think he had some good ideas and I'd like to see a few of them happen in the future. I'd like to see his plans dealing with education come to and I think he can be both agressive and effective in this area.

I'm just against a tax-cut of that magnitude as I have very little doubt that it will do anything but ruin us.

I hope this doesn't turn into anything similar to "The Difference between Republicans and Democrats" thread down the page.

Since I will be teaching high school English in about 2 years, I hope at least 50% of what he wants to do sees fruition...

He made a good speech...

I didn't watch his speech since I stopped watching tv tonight...Overall how would you rate his speech(Poor,Avg,Good,Excellent)?

I can't understand why people now are suddenly talking about his ideas on education. The same stuff I have read about on the net and magazines is the same thing he has gone after for schools here in TX...

I think it was good but I think he promised too much too soon.

You always ask for more than you actually want. then maybe youll get what truely were aiming for in the 1st place. he's done good by Tx, I think hell do well by the rest of the country. He's not the most eloquent speaker, I think thats why most are critical of him, saying hes not very bright. Overall I think he's done very well thus far.

Is anyone else just a bit worried about all the national school testing he wants to do?
Sounds "Big Brother" to me. One more step toward Orwell's 1984.
Imagine having a bad day and the test goes bad.
And those testing results being carried around in a national database for the rest of your life.
Imagine takeing this down the road a decade...
So eventually you're labeled a Beta, denied college entrance and slated to become a janitor, and your friend is an Alpha and gets college grants and a great job.....
Ok, Maybe I'm paranoid, but then maybe it's because I design and build large databases and see how management puts "creative" uses to them.

Thats a good point John...I personally think their is already a data base that labels such things, but the posibility would become greater of this happening given that criteria

Also I thought this testing would be done more then 1 time which would indicate improvement or dropping in scores.

john,

I live in Florida, so I already had a taste of this school testing in the form of the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test). Let me just say that the exam is a joke (not in a bad way) and I fully support implementing it all over the country if it will mean that students will start getting a better education.

I found the two-day test SO easy despite the fact that I didn't get much sleep the previous nights and despite the fact that the testing environment was much less than optimal. (1,000 students together in the basketball gym sitting on wobbly chairs writing on old wooden tables). Even my friends who weren't as good students as I did well.

The only people who didn't do well on those tests are those who really shouldn't be passing on to the next grade anyway (or rather, those who shouldn't even be in their current grade).

It's more of a: "Let's make sure the teachers are doing their jobs" test than a "Let's find an excuse to screw up some kid's life" test.

John,

On the other hand, wouldn't it not be so bad to break the ideology of "everyone is the same"?

On a personal level, the federal government should stay out of education altogether. If that pesky Constitution means anything, then it's a state-level issue. How often we ignore that 10th Amendment.
