I am going on 9 months now of watching almost zero TV other than what I see in passing. I do not watch any broadcast television of any form, except occasional sporting events at bars. I still watch movies, but only at the theater and on DVD.

I can honestly say, without reserve, that I wouldn't care if I never watch TV again. TV is the single biggest waste of time I can think of, along with the most effective medium for brainwashing by big government and big business.

I used to know people who did not own a TV by choice. But that was back when I was very young. I just remember thinking that they were the "stupidest people in the world". Now I realize they were the most enlightened. I still own a TV, but I have no cable, and I purposely threw away my antenna to resist any possible temptation. It's basically just a monitor for videogames and DVD.

TV does not allow you to think for yourself. You become used to sitting for long periods of time without a single creative thought passing through your mind. Once you stop, your mind becomes more focused, with your thoughts more clear...often because you merely have more time just to think.

So this is my challenge: Absolutely NO TV for a minimum of 6 weeks. Think you can do it? For those who were raised on television, this might seem impossible. Think of it as a strict diet. The first few weeks are really tough as you try to adjust to a radically different lifestyle. Slowly, it becomes tolerable. Then you feel normal after you get used to the change. Finally your mood starts to improve and you begin to wonder how you ever let yourself get so fat in the first place. If you can hold out long enough, TV will cease to be a part of your life.

To prepare for this, get yourself a pile of books on subjects that interest you...Steven King, John Grisham, Michael Creighton, or your own personal favorites. Buy some magazines and put them in the pile. Break out your old CD's that you have not listened to in months. Hang out on the discussion boards. Go for a long bike ride.
There are any number of productive activites you could do to keep busy. After it is done, you will have accomplished much to better yourself. You will wonder how you could have allowed yourself to waste away so much of your precious time in front of something so meaningless as a cathode ray-tube in a box.

So that's my challenge. I would love to hear who is willing to give it a shot.

At least with a computer in a forum, you are communicating with a group of people who stimulate your mind. You actually have to read and think unlike TV which is only pictures and sounds. Browsing all day long is just as bad, I agree. But if you know what you are looking for, the effect is the exact opposite.

I watch very little TV and never really have after the age of 15. I watch maybe an hour a week (sopranos or oz or something). I agree with most of what you said, it definetly has delted a GREAT DEAL from family communication, if my family sat around a table at dinner it would fill with akward silence, I attribute that to a lack of communication b/c of too much tv when I was a lil slopain.

I view TV as a release, just like I view this board...like madbomber said, it takes your mind off the real world for 30 minutes, an hour, whatever, and relaxes you...

I see no problem with watching a few shows (in my case Boston Public, Ally McBeal, Friends, and ER) each week and getting "involved" in them...

Now living vicariously through Survivor, Temptation Island, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, etc. isn't healthy...but it's the vacrious part that's bad, not the TV!

Amazingly, I agree 100% with your thoughts on television. As Harold Innis formulated, TV is a cool medium that uses emotion and images to create an impression in your mind. It is far more emotional than it is cognitive.

Literary works, the newspaper (and to some extent the Internet) are a hot media that allow for cognition and mental stimulation.

Although I do agree with your message, it will be difficult to leave the room whenever my GF (or her roommates) decide to watch television while I am at her flat. It will be difficult but it can be done. I will keep you updated on my progress.

I don't watch much tv either, but really, what's the difference between reading a damn book, and imagining the whole thing taking place in your head, or watching a story unfold on screen? Big deal, your brain's not using its imagination, but damn, I use my brain enough on a daily basis counting calories and sets and whatnot, my god, I need some kind of pudding for my imagination sometimes.

If Bill Phillips can motivate, maybe I can too

I'm looking forward to see if everyone makes it. Let's see...April 15th? That's a good finish line date. And hopefully it will continue on after that for everyone.

Even though I won't be participating in this challenge of yours, I agree with everything you are saying.

My television time hardly ever exceeds one hour a day, and like many others it usually takes place when I'm eating or when I'm on the treadmill at the gym.

"Survivor" is the magic word. That show is completely useless. Obviously I have never watched it, but I know it's premise because the hype is everywhere....even on the internet.

People have listed some quality educational programming that is not necessarily all bad. And maybe giving time to a couple of shows that you really like for an hour or two per week is alright also. But the problem comes in when people do not immediately turn off the TV when their show is over. If you want to watch something like the Sopranos, that is fine. Think of it as the same thing as a "cheat" meal in a diet. It can be good for your sanity. But after that show hits the credits, immediately turn the TV off. Don't be tempted by the next show that follows.

Here's some irony. Ever notice how TV families almost never watch TV? And when they do, it is only to watch one show, news brief, or commercial that relates to them directly. After they see what they are looking for, they immediately turn off the TV.

Well, I dont really think I watch to much TV. Theres really only one thing I "must" watch and thats the Sapranos, Dallas Cowboys (or a good matchup), Spurs & Stars in the playoffs. If I watch TV and these things are not on then Im watching the Discover, TLC, A&E or the History channel. The type of showes that interesting, maybe learn a thing or two. So I dont think thats "all" that bad. But I hear what your saying. Other than that I watch movies. But I dont think I could stay away completly as I to see it as a getaway from reality. A mental "break" if you will.
