I was offered a job installing fiber optic phone lines that paid in 6 figures. I turned it down because it required 80 hours a week. My family is pissed as hell at me. I don't make much money now but I'm training to bocome an airline pilot, which is what I really want to do. With 80 hour weeks it would be impossible to train as a pilot and hold down a job. (and workout). Am I crazy for saying no?

No, your smart for saying no. A person's life should not revolve around a job. A job should not be your life. Good for you that you said no. You will enjoy the pilot thing much more I guarantee. peace

You're smart to say 'no.' What you turned down was not a $100,000/yr job. You turned down a $50,000/yr job that required twice the normal working hours. If your family is still pissed at you, please inform them that 80 hours a week means that you work the ENTIRE DAY and are only home for 8 hours during which you sleep AKA they would never see you again, and, on the weekends when they did, you would be a grumpy asshole whom no one likes just like my friend's father who also works 80 hours a week.

Not worth it. You made the right decision.

not to be the naysayer, but an airline pilot has crazy hours as well.
but yeah, I agree that for that many hours, that pay level is too low. my friends work more than that, but they also make over a million a year.

im with scrappy, im not saying you should have taken the job, but my university is known for aviation and even has its own air strip. if you are a pilot, you are doing it because thats what your passion is. most start off making NOTHING, after spending a ton of cash for hours of training. lottsa guys and girls drop the major because once you do land a good job, you work ALOT, cant have any "fun"(almost no partying what so ever, possibly even including alcohol, its a serious business) and at that good commercial job there are constant medical check-ups. they find something wrong, YOURE GONE! so good luck and do whats best for you.

You need to live your life for you and not for anyone else. We all want to please our families but make decisions based on what YOU want. If you think you made the best decision than you did. Don't let people make you second guess yourself.
