My son will be 11 in April. He was 10.6 lbs. when he was born and has been bigger than kids his own age his whole life. He is 5'3" and 155 lbs. now. He is not obese but extremely thick. He does have some baby fat in his mid-section with some celulite. He is very self-concious about this. He rides his little Razor scooter for hours on end after school, plays football, races with me...very active kid. I was wondering at what age he can/should start with weights. He has the broadest back and shoulders on any kid his age, he is going to be huge. His Dad is 6'4" and 260 lbs. The doctor said he will be even bigger....Holy cow, I can't imagine that. Any advise will be appreciated.

Damn!

That's a big kid.

You may want to introduce him to cardio also..

Children can weight train. But it is essential that the poundages be moderated so as not to affect joints or connective tissue in a negative way. MACHINES would be the best way to get started.

Don't put your child in the squat rack and ask him why he can't squat 500 in a month.

what he needs:

Machines

Moderation

An agent for his NFL days

thats a good size boy you got....Start him doing things like pushups, situps, and running...set goals and attach rewards like "Special Gym day" that way he builds up a little strength but doesn't get too carried away with going to the gym. You can also do that so you can slowly introduce him to working out.

Howdy kartchick...

Ol' Skywalker pretty much summed it up, and I like Tx-c-guy (how couldn't I, I'm a Texas college guy, too, only at the better school, BWAHAHAHA!)...

There's no real "age" where they can start lifting...I started at 12, for 7th grade football, and that's the age most doctors "recommend," but we all know we feel about doctors on here...

I'd say when he can do a few sets of push-ups, pll-ups, say 12-15 at a time, start him on a circuit-type program in the gym on 8-10 machines 2-3 times/week...keep him away from the heavy compound movements (squat, bench, etc.) for the first year or so...

Good luck...

i agree that he is not too young... also, the machines and cardio are a great idea, as are the plyometric stuff... keep the kid away from free weights until he has a good base, that way he wont end up with a rotator cuff tear or anything else that will nag him for a very long time... keep him active, thats the key... active and interested and you will retire in 10 years when he signs his first contract in the NFL...

speaking of which... FOOTBALL FIRST!!! throw that razor scooter out!

what sports is he involved in?How mobile is he? You also might want to invest in a some jump ropes, challenge him to do 15 straight minutes a day...When I was his age I was about as tall as him but weighed 135lbs and my cordination wasn't worth a flip. If he has good flexiability and cordination that would benefit him alot more at his age in getting ready for serious weight training later

Tx, sounds like my kid alright. He is very uncoordinated also. He's played, soccer, baseball, football and racing. Racing does not require extreme physical strength but eye, hand, foot coordination is a must so he is ok there. I will get him a jump rope and see what happens. The worst would be a trip to the emergency room after he trips himself repeatedly. I think he does need to loose a little weight before he can pull up his own body weight. He can do some pushups but looks more like he is trying to do the worm. We'll get started and see how he takes it. He is one of those big teddy bear type kids, wouldn't hurt a fly. Gotta change that if I plan on sitting back watching him play in the NFL one day.

feed him more red meat...All the meat haters that pass out phamplets at my school say it causes us become animalistic

I don't think cordination at that age could be stressed enough. The earlier he becomes flexible and cordinated the stronger it will make him in the long run
