Excellent point, although tragic...Americans should re-evaluate
their belief in who their "heroes" are......
NASCAR and Perspective

19 February 2001
On 18 February 2001, while racing for fame and fortune, Dale Earnhardt died in the last lap of the Daytona 500. It was surely a tragedy for his family, friends and fans. He was 49 years old with grown children, one, which was in the race. I am new to the NASCAR culture so much of what I know has come from the newspaper and TV. He was a winner and earned everything he had. This included more than "$41 million in winnings and ten times that from endorsements and souvenir sales". He had a beautiful home and a private jet. He drove the most sophisticated cars allowed and every part was inspected and replaced as soon as there was any evidence of wear. This is normally fully funded by the car and team sponsors. Today, there is no TV station that does not constantly remind us of his tragic end and the radio already has a song of tribute to this winning driver.
Nothing should be taken away from this man, he was a professional and the best in his profession. He was in a very dangerous business but the rewards were great. Two weeks ago seven U.S. Army soldiers died in a training accident when two UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters collided during night maneuvers in Hawaii. The soldiers were all in their twenties, pilots, crew chiefs and infantrymen. Most of them lived in sub-standard housing. If you add their actual duty hours (in the field, deployed) they probably earn something close to minimum wage. The aircraft they were in were between 15 and 20 years old. Many times parts were not available to keep them in good shape due to funding. They were involved in the extremely dangerous business of flying in the Kuhuku mountains at night. It only gets worse when the weather moves in as it did that night. Most times no one is there with a yellow or red flag to slow things down when it gets critical. Their children where mostly toddlers who will lose all memory of who "Daddy" was as they grow up. They died training to defend our freedom.
I take nothing away from Dale Earnhardt but ask you to perform this simple test. Ask any of your friends if they know who was the NASCAR driver killed on 18 February 2001. Then ask them if they can name one of the seven soldiers who died in Hawaii two weeks ago. 18 February 2001, Dale Earnhardt died driving for fame and glory at the Daytona 500. The nation mourns. Seven soldiers died training to protect our freedom. No one can remember their names and most don't even remember the incident.

i agree with the general idea behind this although it's not really fair to bash people for not remembering those soldiers' names. this is not americans' fault, this is american media's fault, something which we don't have much control over. dale earnhardt was in the public eye for decades whereas these soldiers were not. we can't remember the name of every single person that dies. it happens every day.

This is a good story... I would never think of anyone in the entertainment industry as a hero.

Excellent post Big Buck! If I see one more untalented rock star or spoiled arrogant sports star passed off as a role model and hero I'll kill...The real heroes are the ones we don't see highlighted on Access Hollywood. They're ordinary regular people around us who from day to day deal with extreme and extraordinary circumstances in their own lives.Men and women I've never met who fought to make my life free and kids like Ryan White who lost the battle for his life but brought the Aids Health crisis into the mainstream. We'll probably never really know or hear about most of the heroes around us.Our society only rewards the rich, beautiful, and scandalous.

The guy that slugs it out at his job week after week for his family is also a hero of mine. They die all the time - 17 a day, 6200 a year - and rarely if ever does anyone hear about it.
I don't know the Marines but I knew about the accident.

BigBuck,
That was an excellent post and I'm glad I got to read it.
I read about those troops on the Blackhawk and I felt bad for them. Active duty people don't get paid shit and they have the hardest, most necesarry job in this country.

I was wondering though. When George W Bush gave his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention ha talked about how a bunch of out military would be unable to report because of lack of equipment and some other reasons. The military was pissed off about that comment.

Why were they mad? GWB was trying to help them and draw attention to their needs.

Real heros help others without getting a single penny for it-----Their are not many out their----Volunteer doctors in third world countries are heros----Policeman that put their bodies in the line of fire are not heros---they choose to do this and get a pay check for it-------If you are a volunteer policeman and get nothing for it, I would consider you a hero---- A fireman that saves a life in a burning building, is not a hero---You pay taxes for this guy to do what he does--And he choose that career-But take a guy that is walking by a burning building and runs in a saves a life---that is a hero--He gets nothing from it--

Wonderful post and a lot of thought went into it, I comend you for that. That much thought should go into every home in America. Let our children know that Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, Forth of July etc... are not just vacation days from school & work. We should remember all who have died, faught and still fight for our freedom. This comming from a true NASCAR fan and kart driver. He was not my hero, he was my favorite race car driver & he was a great man. Some people can not see the difference between real heros and idols. Dale may have made many lives better by sharing his fortune and fame but he did not make the country as a hole a better place to live, work and breath in. I do agree with the post blaming the press. They report on mostly on what they think people want to hear, instead of what they NEED to hear & see. I pray for all families who have lost loved ones for whatever reasons, not just the rich and famous. Goodnight all...
