If you were running for public office and you weren't concerned with lobbyists, alienation from your own party, or what other people thought of you, what would be your message?

What issues would you bring to the forefront and what stances would you take on those issues?

Here are some issues to get you started. Feel free to bring up or discuss any others that also come to mind.

1. The war on drugs
2. Taxes
3. Welfare
4. General crime
5. Free speech and censorship
6. Affirmative action
7. Gun control
8. Corporate lobbying

ADD MORE!!!!!!!

IF I WERE A POLITICIAN
I would do what most do. Lie to get in then do my own thing.

I'd stop the war on drugs and use the billions
of $$$ spent on it to like .....feed people.
Food for the poor??? what an alien concept?

First, flat tax 10%.
This would be accompanied a drastic reduction in government employees.

Second, re-evaluate the military budget. Why do we need $550 million dollar airplanes that can't fly in the rain? Why has the US Army been walking for 225 years and the boots still suck? Is an F22 really so much better than an F-18? I would re-allot the dollars from the individual solider/sailor/airman/marine on up, instead of top down. I suspect it would result in a lowering of the budget, yet a strengthening of the fighting force.

Third, I would make military service tax-free. It might actually attract a higher number of quality people to the service.

Fourth, Deployed US troops would come home. Bosnia? why? No more holidays away from families for bullshit.

Fifth, I would consider strongly the withdrawal of the US from the UN.

Sixth, Social Security would end effective 1 January 2002. Those who have paid into it, will get their benefits, and other monies would be returned proportional to contributions.

Seventh, Immediate legalization of marijuana.
(I did not take money from havoc. Pot being illegal is bullshit.)

Eighth,

A dramatic increase on speed limits on all Interstates. Perhaps 100 miles an hour, where roads will support it and traffic volume is not excessive.

I would also study closely:

-legalizing other drugs

-ending drug war madness by curtialing teh rights of police regarding stoppages and searches.

-a greater shift toward state funded programs such as welfare, unemployemnt, etc.

Matt,

Could you please explain the flat tax to me in as much depth as you can spare?

I know very little about it.
Thanks.

I'd vote for Matt. I like everything he said, but I'd try to eliminate welfare over a few years. The qualifications would be a lot harder right off the get and I'd like to totally eliminate it eventually. I would also allocate some money towards developing synthetic fuel.

Kwai,

Flat tax is fairly simple. Everyone pays the same amount. Given my hypothetical 10%, it works like this:

You make $51,000/year. You pay $5,100 in taxes.

I make $190,000/year. I pay $19,000.

The CEO of Cisco makes $100,000,000 per year. He pays $10,000,000.

No deductions. No credits or any of that. There would be a certain level under which no taxes are paid, i.e. $23,000 or something thereabouts.

I agree with the flat tax completely. There is no reason to pay a disproportionately higher percentage because one earns more income.

Just curious as to why you would support the withdrawl of the United States from the United Nations?

Would not such a move result in weaker ties to other nations and further alienate the US from them?

Matt,

Do you have any idea of what kind of returns such a tax plan would produce?
How would it measure up in comparison to today's tax plan?
What are the arguments against this type of tax?

Kwai,

haven't had a chance to think about it.

Schweeler,

The US's membership in the UN gets us into shit we need not be in. Likewise NATO. Do US troops need to be in the Balkans? Nope. let European nations handle that situation - they are close to it.

Should US troops have gone to Somalia in 1993? Nope. Let the local countres handle it.

because of our economic infrastructure and unapproached wealth as a nation, we are looked to in order to provide economic and TOO OFTEN military assistance.

When America is perfect, we can start sticking our noses into other countries' problems. Until then, let's take care of ourselves.

One more tenet of President Skywalker: The government research and development budget would increase, from some of the money saved by the elimination of Social Security.

It was, after all, the government that brought us nuclear power, the Internet, jet engines, put us on the moon, etc. I would give scientists the mandate to work out any potential kinks in nuclear power.....California is having blackouts for God's sake....while nuclear power could power everything.

Another research project would be to develop a way to get better than 60 miles per gallon of gas. Time to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

I would tax tobacco like $3 more per can of chew or pack of smokes.

I would reduce gun control and make it easier to get a concealed weapon permit.

I would have rapists and murderers put to death within 6 months of being found guilty.

I would cane juveniles that commit crime like they do in China.

I would make mandatory jail time for DUI and DWI offendors.

I would support the flat tax.

I would legalize steroids, or atleast reduce the punishment to a misdemeanor.

I would pound the hell out of Fred Durst.

I would banish all non-patriots.

I would stop the influx of aliens at our borders, and make a law stating people born into this country to parents that are not citizens would NOT be citizens either.

I would make English the official language in the USA, period!
