I have an idea.

I've taught myself program, but as fate would have it I don't do that for a living. But what I want to do is develop a plug in or an extenion to ICQ that allows ENCRYPTED converstations between the people chatting.

I bet this is not difficult, and it will solve a lot of problems that are happening currently.

Does anyone have any ideas where to begin?

Write a plug in that stores the message into a buffer before its sent. Then in an offscreen function encrypt or encode the data and send it. The other person would need a corresponding plug in that would decode the message. Furtheremore if you had an identifying string at the top of the message you could have the decoder turn on and off accordingly(so that you can talk to other people that don't have the plug). Even better would be to write a program that creates a sockect and acts like icq. This way you have complete control. In my opinion that would be the easiest...

come on! I've posted this before - I'm writing an encrypted IM in java right now for fun. using the blowfish alg.

technically there are already programs out there that will let you do this - there is one that lets you do all the various ones (AOL,ICQ,Yahoo, etc) and it has an encrypted plugin - I'm still writing mine as a learning experience.

yeah, they are unencrypted packets, so they can be sniffed, along with mail, telnet sessions, web browsing sessions, etc etc.

I used to sniff the network back in school and see what profs were looking at kinky porn sites. there were a lot of them.

on a side and not entirely related note, after I graduated, they banned napster use on campus. they claimed it was due to the large amount of bandwith that it took up - but I disagree with them, I think they were under pressure since one of the largest contributors to the school is the Bronfman family, which also happens to own Seagrams, which also happens to own a recording label.

that's what I be saying.

I knew it was possible, but I didn't think those bastards would actually do that in an attempt to get convictions (YES I'M CALLING YOU GUYS BASTARDS).

All the bastards know accomplished is pushing all conversations to be encrypted now.

it is easiest to sniff if it is in/on your local network. if it is a switched network, then it becomes harder - but it is still feasible (I think you flood the swith with ARP requests and it fills the buffer with those and then you can read all packets).

what tends to happen is that someone will hack into a machine on a network and then from that account sniff that network. ideally you hack a chain of computers and then sniff at the end of that chain - that way it takes more steps for them to follow you.

if it makes you feel any better it is hard to run a program on your computer and sniff any random computer out there. there are ways to do it, but not easily. local networks are much easier.
