Up until a few weeks ago, as far as astronomers knew, our solar system was the only one of its kind in the Universe. While giant planets have been observed around some nearby stars, rocky planets like Mars, Venus, Mercury and Earth have never been observed, because of their small size, and because of the vast distances involved, and because of the relatively insignificant effect rocky planets have on the stars they orbit compared to gas giants, like Jupiter. This week, however, in a discovery that rates about a 738 on yer old pal Jerky's Awe-mo-meterTM (patent pending), University of Toronto astronomer Norman Murray has analyzed the iron content of 466 stars and determined that close to half the stars in our galaxy display a high likelihood of having earth-like planets in orbit around them. That's literally hundreds of BILLIONS of stars in the Milky Way alone. Murray checked for iron content because stars that are known to planets (including our own Sun) have a far greater chance of being struck by iron-rich asteroids, and asteroids are a by-product of planetary system formation. Stars that are known to be totally planet-free are relatively iron-free. "It's one more indication that life might be common in the galaxy," egg-head Murray told reporters at a San Francisco science conference, adding: "there's no direct evidence there's another Earth, but it's pointing in that direction. If only one percent of those planets are Earth-like, it would mean the existence of more than a billion Earths." Which means there's a possibility that yer old pal Jerky's lifelong dream of screwing a chick who looks exactly like Boy on a Dolphin-era Sophia Loren - with an extra pair of tits and translucent lavender skin - might one day come to pass.

I think life is common in the universe, and I'm sure there is intelligent life out there also. I don't believe that aliens are here though, I mean look at the people who have claimed to be abducted..unless we are part of some galaxy wide fat bitch/mullet survey.

Well, this is the way I see it: First, there are millions, if not billions of planets out there that are capable of supporting life. Of those billions, there are likely to be thousands of worlds where life has developed so that it hosts some relatively intelligent species. Another percentage of these worlds hosts life of human intelligence or greater. And think about this for a moment: We are now at a point where starship class vessels are not too far away. We already have some theories to approach 50% of light speed....it just takes the funding to develop these ships. Think of where we will be in another 2000 years....it boggles the mind if you think in terms of how rapidly technology advances these days. Now imagine how easy it would be for any one of those intelligent races to be hundreds, if not millions of years ahead of us in technology. It would be like comparing our modern technological marvels with that of the stone hammers that ancient man used. If aliens are here, they have been for thousands of years studying how fast we mature as a species. We are not in a strategic position in the galaxy to be desirable for conquerers. So rather if there are aliens, they study us as an anthropologist or a sociologist would. If there were aliens and our planet was toward the center of the galaxy, we would have been overtaken thousands of years ago with all of Earths resources sucked dry. But all of Earths resources can be found anywhere in the galaxy....oxygen, water, heavy water for fusion, etc. So a conquering species will not waste the time and resources traveling all the way to the edge of the galaxy for our insignificant solar system. Think of how many billions of dollars it costs us to move our Naval vessels to Iraq all at once. But I'm sure that we are very interesting to scientists of their species. So for anyone who thinks we could ever be "invaded"....put that thought out of your mind now, because it is not going to ever happen. The only thing that could change that is if we develop some technology that is greater than anything in the galaxy. That might attract some attention from those who could use it to their advantage. But then again, there may not be anyone else out there who is much farther than us. There could have been at one time or potentially, but since war is so universal, it's likely that they annilated each other when they were where we are today in terms of nuclear and biological weapons. Just like that possibilty, it is a very real idea that our species will not survive until the 23rd century because of what we could potentially unleash on the world.

i think the asteroid 'ALH84001' that fell to earth from Mars proves that intelligent life exists out there. This asteroid contained bacteria like organisms which are the building blocks of our existance so it is very realistic to assume that in this infinite galaxy life does exist.

Interesting, there was an article in yesterday news -- they found water vapor in most intersteller gas and around most stars.

i find it fascinating to contemplate the anatomical structure other life forms would have, think about all the strange creatures this earth has, think of what they have yet to discover in the depths of our oceans, then think at all the possibilities that exist in this universe......

Considering how many stars may be hosts to life, and yet they haven't tried to contact us makes me believe they are so far advanced they don't consider us worth contacting. After all, when was the last time you tried to have a conversation with a cockroach?

If I am not mistaken, iron is the final substance that a star's fusion process can create. That would be from the fusing of Oxygen atoms (been a while) Now given this there will be some iron content in any star of significant age. As for the asteroids and comets, remember comets are comprised mainly of frozen water vapor and ice and stuff like that. Also, given the immensity of a star like the Sun, it would take billions and billions of asteroids to appreciably raise the detectable iron content of a star. Now I don't know the full extent of the research, but based on what yer ol pal jerky is reporting, I find it improbable the conclusion that was made. However, even a planet the size of earth will cause a star say, the size of the Sun to wobble detectably by us. Even mars or mercury could produce a wobble that we might be able to detect. Need more info on the above research to see if it is for real or a joke. ------------------

I may be different. I can feel people looking at me. exp: when driving down the rd I can feel somebody in the car next to me looking at me I look over and it is a hot girl. The majority of the time I smile and we pull into the next parking lot and talk.
