I've recently come across a Windows 2000 Professional edition CD (heh heh heh), and I'm in the process of backing everything up to do a clean format and install the new OS. The main functions of my PC are for web development work, system-demanding gaming (Quake3), and some other basic stuff that doesn't really require big time system performance. For any of you who have used both Win98 and Win2k Pro, could you please either encourage or discourage me from installing 2k Pro? =) Thanks, ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!!

I'm running 2k server on this machine right now - it is doing fine. then again, it is a dual PIII 667 with half a gig of ram... ------------------

Just echoing Happy's point - win2kPro takes huge resources (yeah I saw he had Server...but even professional will gobble them up).

As long as your processor is relativly decent (which if you are playing Quake 3, then it must be) - then you are fine. but you can never have enough ram. and it is so cheap now - I have another half gig in the mail right now and I think then I finally will be happy with this setup (I do a lot of 3D graphics - lots of crunching). I'm installed and run pretty much everything out there except WinME - and then best is BeOS But if it has to Windows, 2K Pro is great! ------------------

I have a Celery 300A overclocked to 450, 96 megs of RAM, and Windows 2000 and ME are both way to slow on my machine. I could use some more RAM, but I'm just going to get a new system soon anyway. I'd probably stick to Windows 98 if you planned on doing more gaming.

I used a system that was running a web server, a sql server, and we were doing java development on it and it was only a PII - but it had 256 ram... which in my opinion is the minimum for Win2K. I think winME was a mistake and sucks hairy balls. ------------------ |
