I was just skipping channels and came across this barbra walters special...and well what they were talking about was human cloning and how there is this company in the states that is ready to start cloning humans. They have scientists and everything! They even have women willing to carry these clones in their bodies. What got me is that there are no laws in the states against human cloning (atleast not yet) It is illegal only in 5 states! The company is headed by some freak scientist by the name of RAEL who is the founder of a religious organization. They say that they would help infertile couples and people who have lost loved ones!! I just wanted to know how people feel about this? The company is called Clonaid.com For more info goto www.clonaid.com Oh yeah, they are expecting their first clone in march!!!     | ||

Imagine a small child who for some unknown reason is killed (hit by a car..which I have seen and was the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed personaly...the child was 3 years old....) and then being able to "go back" and have the child "brought back"?? I don't think that there is a parent here that would object to that.... ------------------ | ||

I believe that humans have already been cloned.I think cloning could be a good thing. I would love to see ARNOLD get cloned.Imagine at this day & age a genetic freak such as ARNOLD in todays bodybuilding world.With all the knowledge & chemistry today or the future it would be freaky. I agree with bringing a child back thought somewhat, its just that it is so easy to get somoenes strand of hair without their permission and clone that person. Also it doesnt seem right. If your going to die, your gonna die. Messing with the guy upstairs is somewhat weird I think. | ||

Maxtor, Cloning and individual will not result in an identical copy. Although the genetic makeup will be the same, there are differences, such as expression and repression of genes which will vary. Additionally, much of what a person is, is defined by their exeriences, therefore, no two will ever be the same. The "small child dying" example is the most analogous to a true clone, because the younger they are, the less they have experienced, therefore, the greater the role of genetics. Still, it would not be a true "do-over." It is another baby. The TRUE science wizardy would be in locating the area of the brain where memories are stored, and being able to transplant or replicate that. Then we could truly live forever. The second form of mega-science would be to locate the gene that controls aging, so the aging prcess can be accelerated (to have the baby become the age of the lost child), and then stopped later on. Nature has been cloning people (twins) since the dawn of life. Big deal that we do it now. Far greater achievements include mastery of electricity and nuclear energy. As it is now, science knows nothing about the brain. What causes dreams? Where are emotions located? Where is memory? Answer these and we can see some life changing breakthroughs. | ||

You can't trust a guy with a name like RAEL!!! HE's got mad scientist written all over him. On another note, you can only clone from live DNA, so we won't be cloning Christ until he comes back. | ||

Well, that and the shroud has been proven about 3 different times now to be a fake that was done I think in the 18th centruy (it might have been the one prior). And I was going to point out my biggest pet peeve with this cloning stuff, but Matt beat me to it - the person will look the same and all, but they haven't lived through all the same experiences, so mentally they are a very different person. they are coming into life with a blank hard drive so to speak. and they have found how our cells age, but they don't know how to stop it. if I recall correctly, there is a "tail" off one part of the dna and parts of this tail fall off with cell turnover - once the tail is gone, no more cell turnover, so you don't get the new ones... that is probably the worst description I've ever written ------------------ [This message has been edited by HappyScrappy (edited February 17, 2001).] | ||
