How good a president is/was? Since economics is a relative non-factor in terms of political control, what is the criteria?

[email protected] my opinion, you have look at the basic "state" of the country for about 10-15 years AFTER they're president...The Reagan years were great, but now we've got this massive debt that is a direct result...it's not an immediate thing...VERY HARD TO JUDGE...!!! ------------------

The Reagan/Bush era is also the era that planted the seed for all these companies to boom this last decade. Tell me how your day to day life would be any different if we had no debt. It does not even affect you. But...I guarantee you would feel the effects of no jobs and a major recession much like what was evident in the early 80's when Reagen bailed us out. ------------------

But thats the economy, and as stated before, the governemnt has little to do with it, ups and owns will occur regardless of who is in power. So, since you CANNOT base the success or failure of a government on the economic conditions of the time, what IS the criteria?

You are crazy, it is the government that determines tax cuts like Reagen implemented to give the corporations a boost for R&D and allow them to keep from moving to another country where it is cheaper to run a business. I would imagine sound decisions for the country as a whole, being non-biased, and not abusing power like Clinton. ------------------

There is no criteria. It depends on luck more than anything.

My history books in school had the tendancy to rate presidents. Thing is, there was a direct correlation between the rating of the prez and the ammount of turmoil the country was in at the time. eg. FDR and Lincoln and Washington rated very high. These people, I believe, simply had more of an opportunity to be great. who knows? Puc

Puc, I agree 110%, some presidents served in a era where nothing really big happened, which prevented them from really "doing' anything... With all honesty, I don't think you can judge...there are too many factors involved, the majority in which we as ordinary citizens will never even know about!! ------------------ |
