On my last programming assignment, my teacher gave me a 19/20 (notice how I didn't say "I earned a 19/20"). I lost 1 point because the print-out of my program "looked ugly" even though it looked beautiful on the screen (my comments wrapped around to the next line... oh no that really ruins program efficiency). As payback, instead of writing a piece of crap A-quality 15-minute programming assignment like my first assignment, I spent about an hour and a half writing a kickass program using 3 classes instead of the 1 that was required and I made it efficient as hell. As a result, it's 12 pages long. HAVE FUN GRADING THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and the printout looks pretty too). -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

hey man, give him credit - it sounds like he just made you write a better program! ![]() ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]()

Happy, Program comments are read on the computer screen. If they look fine on the screen, who cares how they look on paper? My program works just as well with wrapped comments as it would without. =) JohhnyO, They are the worst! =) Gilbyag, I know, right? If they are so smart then why are they teaching something instead of being out there doing the actual job? My teacher's cool and he's a good teacher, but some of his grading criteria really sucks. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Maybe you should forward that death threat email that people got to your prof. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Warik - real world programming = 20% new development, 80% maintenance. If the code isn't readable it's hard to maintain. Machines are cheap. Disks are cheap. Cpu cycles are cheap. People are expensive. As a programming manager, I wouldn't care that your 12 page program ran more efficiently. I would prefer your short less efficient version because it was more readable, and therefore easier to maintain. And yes, your real world manager may very well make you rework your program to make the comments "pretty" on print out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

john, My code was perfect. Comments looked perfect on the screen. The comments that wrapped were the comments that commented painfully OBVIOUS shit that we were instructed to comment anyway even though it wasn't necessary. Teacher just needed something to deduct because I finished the program in less than an hour and turned it in the day after it was assigned even though it was due in 3 weeks. Unless you're a peon like everybody else in the class, the teacher plays games with you. It's ridiculous. BTW: john, you said: "As a programming manager." Are you a programming manager or were you speaking hypothetically? -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm not currently a programming manager, but I have been in the past. I'm currently a DB2 database administrator and RS/6000 AIX systems administrator. I've worked on contracts that required all source code to be printed out and bound as part of the project documentation. Making it "pretty" was part of creating a "professional looking" product. Many project developments these days run budgets in the millions of dollars. If the client is paying millions, management is willing to spend a few bucks extra to make it "look good". Your work product will often be judged on its appearence rather than its substance. Grumble if you want to, but be ready for it. You play petty coding pranks on your real job programming manager, you'll be out on your ear. [This message has been edited by john937 (edited February 16, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

quote: My real programming manager would expect the "petty coding prank" that I played instead of the 2 page program that I was assigned in which everything would be hard coded and any modification would require changing code in 10 different places of the program. I'm not worried. And I don't plan to be working under anybody for too long anyway. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
