I took 4 years of Latin, and even translated Caesar's Commentaries of the Gallic Wars for a project....I have several favorites: 1. Accipere quam facere prastat injuriam 2. Alea iacta est 3. Aquila non captat muscas 4. At vindicta bonum vita iundius ipsa 5. Dulce bellum inexpertis 6. In vino veritas 7. Nemo risum praebuit, qui ex se coepit. Ranger

Kat, Latin is a bit of a struggle at first, but I think it is worth the effort. I would recommend the following textbook: Wheelocks Latin by Frederick M. Wheelock, 6th edition (Richard A. LaFleur,ed.) and the following reference works: Hornblower, Simon, and Anthony Spawforth, eds. The Oxford Classical Dictionary, 3rd edition (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996) Lewis, C. T. Elementary Latin Dictionary. (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1969)

Latona-- actually, I'm pretty rusty with the Latin myself, so I shouldn't criticize. A few of your endings are off, thats all. Have a few nouns in the wrong case, a few verbs in the wrong voice. But, understandable, nontheless.

Stone - I just saw your pics, so I definitely don't want to mess with you! But, I just looked them over and I only found one mistake in the personal ad. My latin is mostly self-taught and I have more experience reading as opposed to writing it. If you could spare the time, let me know what else is wrong or what the correct ending are. I could use the constructive criticism! Thanks.

Kat, did you see my post above? Those are some good books to get started with. If you're looking for a class, I would check the local university or even the local high school. Almost every school has a Classis department and if they don't offer night classes, you might be able to find a tutor. Good luck!

well, here is what I THOUGHT was incorrect. If it is indeed correct, then I apologize beforehand. BTW... that is damn impressive that your learned latin by yourself. In the second threat: you say "ut Gallia" as a simile, to mean "like Gaul." but in my recollection, "ut" means "so that" and is the beginning of a subjunctive clause. I thought there was another word for "like" that is more appropriate, although I can't think of it now. I like the threat, though. Obviously you've read Caesar: Looking again, thats really I can think of. The rest is probably correct. My bad!

Thanks Stone! Sometimes Latin has som many synonyms, it's hard to figure out which is the right one in the right context. I was also thinking that words like 'par', 'tanquam', or 'velut' might work there, but I wasn't sure. Anyway, learning Latin is fun, but knowing Latin and having 20 lbs more muscle on me would be a lot more fun! Congrats on your gains! I hope to be that big someday.
