I am flying to London in June with a couple of my buddies. After a short stay in London, we are planning to take the Euro-train around to see the rest of Europe. What would some of you that have been there suggest as a must see? Thanks ------------------

Watch your back in Paris. Everyone I know who has visited has gotten something stolen there. I spent some time in Switzerland. Everything is crazy expensive there. Your best bet is to go somewhere on the Cote d'Azur. Nice, Caan and Montecarlo are all close together by train.

London is a great place to start as you won't have a language barrier. Regardless of what a world class city London may be, they're still 20 years behind our standard of living. There are some great things in London to do: 1. Westminster Abbey When you're ready to leave England, take a bus to Dover and then a hydrofoil (kind of fun) to Calais, France. You'll be able to grab a train there for Paris. Or, you can just take a train from London to Paris via the Chunnel. In Paris, you'll want to check out: From Paris, I'd head south to the French Riviera (about a 4 hour train ride via the TGV). Go to Monte Carlo, Nice, and Menton (my mom's hometown). All of these are on the Coast and are just a few kilometers from one another. The weather should be pretty good in mid to late June. Menton is just a few kilometers from the Italian Frontier. You can take a train to Milan, then on to Venice (beautiful but not a lot going on except to visit St. Marks's square), then on to Roma. In Rome, check out the Colliseum. Go at nite and jump over the fence and you can wonder through the ruins. I've done it twice and made friends with gypsy youths who treated me to some Hashish. But, be careful of your wallet and don't go alone. After Rome, take a train to Brindisi and take an all nite ferry to Athens (the port is Pareus). Spend an afternoon checking out the Acropolis and then get the hell out of there. Athens has 20 million people and the worst pollution (maybe worse than Mexico City?). I'd suggest then that you go back to the port and grab a ferry out to the Cyclades. Go island hopping for several days. You'll be tired of all the sightseeing you've done and you can just lay on the beaches and party at nite. The big party islands are Naxos and Santorini and Mykonos (if you're gay.) Then fly back to the States from Athens. When I came back at the end of September, it took me 22 hours to get back to San Francisco(considering I had a nine-hour layover in London). Get a current copy of "Let's Go" travel guide for backpackers ... great tips of where to eat, stay, and how to negotiate the trains/buses/etc. Even if you're not going on a tight budget, "Let's Go" is the Bible for traveling in Europe. Hope this helps and have Fun ...

quote: lol- i had no idea , and yeah, i guess our standard of living is kinda less extravagant. Jeez it ain't like you gotta walk 21 miles for potable water though! its amazing what happens to people when they only have 5 TV channels, lol check out leicster square (on northern line on underground. the clubs are like cattle markets in the square (steer well clear of a place called EQUINOX....uurgh). try leisure lounge. Check out the trocedero (picadilly circus), thats kinda cool. Also don't go to pubs too often, their kinda too traditional and boring. go to bars , their loads round leicster square/oxford circus. If you want resturants, and comedy clubs, try like the SOHO area (but watch your back , there are some 'odd' people there! ) ------------------

i personally think londons filthy, bt i guess its kinda clean considering its one of the biggest cities in the world and more people live in it than the WHOLE of scotland!! people i know who emmigrated found it fairly easy to get jobs once here. they all had qualifications though ad even then the jobs weren't particularly high paid. ------------------

Danielson, I would love to London but as an American I think it would be incredibly difficult for me to find suitable employment. I'm a tax consultant specializing in telecommunications taxes. Any suggestions? Heading to Las Vegas to live tomorrow but will probably end up in Los Angeles (West Hollywood) in a couple of months as my career opportunities are going to be severely limited in Las Vegas. BTW: Why did you lol at my post about Earl's Court? Also, is still easy to buy "X" in the clubs? BTW: I hate Amsterdam! I got robbed at knife point there by a coke dealer in an alley. The Amstel brewery is kind of fun though, hiccup.

Wow May and Danielson, thanks for the reply bros! May, it sounds like you have gotten around. We are actually only staying in London for one night, then we have to hustle over to Germany for LoveFest. We are planning on staying there for a week, then doing whatever. I would like to go to Ibiza and check that out for a couple days. Been there? I have also been told to make sure to hit the Greek Isles. There is just too much to do, and not enough time!! Thanks for the replies bros..... ------------------

IBIZA: Since I had been to Mykonos 11 times, I contemplated checking out Ibiza for my trip last September. But, from what I gathered, Ibiza is full of nothing but 25 year olds, overwhelmingly straight. Since I'm firmly entrenched in my 30s and gay, I opted for Myknonos again. I was nervous because on that trip, I traveled alone and thought I would get bored. But, as it turned out, I went to The Twelve God's Party on the Island and I ran into a million guys I knew from San Francisco, even my dentist. Turned out to be my favorite trip of all. GERMANY: I've never been interested in seeing Germany, most likely my loss. But, I hear Berlin is quite fun. I've had layovers in Dusseldorf and Frankfort in the past, that's the extent of my Teutonic travel experience. I'm sure you'll have a great time there! (I saw a travel show a while back about Baden-Baden, a resort town in German that looked quite interesting and fun!) LONDON: You're really missing out if you spend only one night in London. It really is a great place to visit. You should really reconsider or at least spend some time there on your way back!

London is that good? I was talking to some girl on ICQ the other night from some place north of London (forgot the name). She said that there are some of the best clubs there, but the filthy city isn't a place to sight-see. She really talked up Spain, and all the islands (Ibiza mainly). At any rate, I only have three weeks, so I will have to budget my time well. Thanks again May. Daniel, how much is 'e' out there? The price of that garbage is out of hand here!! ------------------

i didn't get anything stolen in paris. London is expensive living, but you can find really good sales on clothes and such. The food is horrible. Paris is fun. Watch out for cheap grabs, and yes everyone smells.Paris has really good crepes. if you find someone selling them on the street- get it- but they are all fat. i miss Europe-belgium is fun too.

quote: i just thought i was fairly well clued up on what goes down in london, and heres a tourist telling me otherwise. just kinda cracked me up as for the american thing, maybe your right. chances are your better off in america as i don't know dick about tax related jobs, but hell, from what i've seen of las vegas, enjoy your stay however short it is . as for X are we talking about the white (or whatever colour) pill that you need to drink water by the gallon (has a herbal variety). or whats havocs into. answer is, yes but i haven't enquired into the pill type, but i'd guess so. anyhow, hope your career prospects all work out well.
as for food, theres loads of kruddy fast food places but lots of swank restyurants too. inbetweens kinda hard

Danielson, Let me just correct you there about Ibiza. It IS amazing, the place to go for pure hedonism. The clubs are unreal and the atmosphere is unrivalled by any other party destination. May1010 would be well happy jigging away in Ibiza Old Town (the gay quarter), just stay clear of San Antonio where all the drunk kiddies go. Apart from that the vibe is amazing. As for the "X" that we call "E" yes it IS everywhere. Its easier to buy a Pill at around 5 ($7.50) from a dealer, than it is to buy a drink from the bar and have to wait for ages to get served. The U.K clubland is currently suffering from a pill epidemic. Its mental! ------------------

Forget London, come to the North of England, the dance capital, Manchester. Nearly as dirty as London but the people are a lot friendlier. I like London but it's fast paced and not many people will have time for you. I'd compare it to a scaled down version of NY (only the buildings aren't as tall!)

Ive been all over Europe... If you want party in the summer go south, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy but specially Spain, not only Ibiza but also Benidorm and Barcelona, etc... Be carefull if ya wanna mess around with mediterranean chicks cause the men sometimes dont like the foreigners to feel like they were at home... If you want history try Italy, Germany, France, the Czech Republic aswell... the central countries have more to offer because they were inhabited by more diversified populations and they have alot of borders... Italy is the worst place when it comes to thiefs, specially Rome, be very carefull... and of course Sicilly since its one of the poorest regions in Europe... Amesterdam and Holland: this is not a paradise for drug dealers as the more ignorant may lead you to think... May1010 had a very bad luck, its not rule it an extreme exception... Scandinavia is the most civilized and developed region of the world... also great landscapes, the nature in its best, educated and nice persons... Paris in the summer is a crap... nobody there, dry and hot climate, awfull, and the criminality is rising...

London is bigger than New York in km2, New York has more inhabitants because of the taller buildings...
